siphoning tips?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi all
was wondering if anyone has any tips on siphoning?
it takes me ages to get mine going
and freaks out the fish
its a small gravel siphon from the lfs
i end up really having to \"stab\" it up and down
lots of times to get it going
my tank is a rekord 60 so its not very deep
and i'm sure this isnt helping things
i have started sucking the end of the hose
through my fist to get it started
but i'm sure this ain't to hygienic

your best bet is to inhale tru the end of the tube like your drinking from a big straw till the water is nearly in your mouth then straight into a container thats how i do it, the fish have no idea its there.

I use just a plastic pipe like used with external filters, I have different thickness depending on how fast I want to syphon out, the main on I use is a little bit smaller thickness hole as a 1 cent, its long so it can go into the bottom of the tank and reach out and over into the bucket.
I suck the end to get the water flowing, with practice you will work out how hard and fast to suck so, it makes it over the tank and gravity gets it going from there with out sucking a mouth full (I have got a few and so far it hasnt had any ill effects on me other, just spit it out into the bucket and rince your mouth out.
I normaly just hover the pipe just over the sand and this sucks up all the mess.
I have used various different methods and equipment, i also have a eheim pump which I could use to suck the water out (its a slower method) but I find the single pipe and suck method the easest and fastest method for me.
I did have one of those pipes with a tube on the end and found this good with gravel as it got the gravel up into the tube and got all the rubbish out and then dropped the gravel back in the tank but as I have sand the pipe and suck works for me.
Good luck

Take your syphon & sink it completely in the water - tube & all & turn it upwards to let the air bubbles escape.
Then leave the syphon part in the water, put your finger over the end of the tube & put it into your bucket - hey presto it will start itself.
Very handy in smaller tanks which are hard to syphon once the water level gets low.
