Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I would advise anyone intending to buy one (or more) of these tanks to get to their local Lidl early on Monday morning - most of the stores sold out very quickly last time, they never even reached my local Lidl!!!

Was all excited and fully intending on getting one of these tanks in Lidl on Monday morning, they are excellent value, they look fab and they would be double the size of my current tank..

....but then I was talking about it and thinking it out, and I was unsure about it.

The thing is, I'm afraid that the weight of the tank would be too much on my kitchen counter top. Plus, would I want a bigger one at a later date anyway?

So, I'm going to hold off and see if I can get a second hand tank & corresponding cabinet in the New Year.

But I'd love to hear how ye's all get on with it...I hope I won't be sorry.

I know there will be a good few in my store on Monday morning, I live in a remote place, and our Lidl usually have stock left mid week when other places are sold out. So I might still have time to change my mind later in the week...hmmm

I'm still nearly tempted to go down anyway and have a look!;)

Ahh Lazerus
The temptation,The Temptation....thats what it all about:) :) I can guarantee if you walk into the shop on monday, you will walk back out with a new aquarium, looking at it tho it does represent very good value, the heater and filter alone must be worth the guts of €45 so you pay about €35 for the tank,i dont think you could build one for that money, then again as you say if you dont have a place to put it :( :(

lar
PS- give yourself another while and I'm certain you will want a bigger tank, fishkeeping -- more addictive than drugs and probably as expensive:laugh:

Hi all...

Ah great you got your tank. I'd love to see some pics when its set up.

I didn't get one myself...actually I haven't set foot outside the door for past few days due to a relay of people being sick in the house with this bloody bug thats going around.

Ah well...

I will look out for something in the New Year though.

Hi all...

I've been thinking about this Lidl tank all Christmas, so I just went out and got one in my local Lidl this morning.

I can't be accused of 'impulse' buying after two weeks of thinking about it!

Its a nice tank. And its three times the volume of my current one so its a nice upgrade.

I'll get a cabinet made up or I'll look around for one to match the size.

Anyone have any joy in finding a cabinet to match?

Morning Lazerus
I knew you would finally give in to temptation:cheer: :cheer: My tank is still sitting under the stairs in the box:) ,i'm going to investigate stands over the next week or so, I'll let you know if I find something suitable tho any half decent carpenter could knock one together pretty cheaply i'd imagine.I have the filter from it installed in my other tank to mature,so when i do sort out a stand i'll be able to get it up and running a bit quicker, best of luck with it, any ideas of what fish you want to put in..????

No...no idea!

I may get some more Rummy Nose tetra though, I've fallen in love with them...they are fabulous shoaling fish. Way better than the Cardinals ever were.

I'm definately going to get a fine sand substrate also which will leave me the option to have some corys.

Anyway, early days yet...Its sitting on my kitchen table at the moment and my god, it looks huge!!!!

I doubt I'll be able to run the filter in my current tank in preparation as I've only a 10 gal (37.5)...it would be way too big.

So what I might do it when the time comes I'll just run my two filters (Quarantine & Main) in the new tank to seed the new bigger filter. I won't get any new fish for a while until things settle down.

I'm delighted I got it actually.... its big enough. Anything bigger would overwhelm me. I'm only breaking into this hobby!

Hi Acara, missed your post there...

The measurements are 80cm length x 30cm width (& 35cm height)

So thats approx 32" x 12".

Actually, just at a quick glance..the Rekord 80/96 might work...the base size is 81cm x 31cm.

I'm also astonished to see the prices in the UK...wow, it appears to be so much cheaper? And that includes the tank & stand combined.

As I say, I didn't spend long looking into it, but its worth a further browse.

I wonder would a trip to the north be worthwhile before I go setting this Lidl tank up?

Things are cheaper in the UK,and with the current exchange rate, even cheaper. When you think about it,the UK probably has more aquatics retailers than Ireland has fish keepers.
Having said that I asked Drew to get me in a rather bulky item(tank hood),and it was in-store within a week, and LESS than what I would've paid online getting it myself. So ask the local boys first.

I must admit, I'd feel awful going up North...support Ireland and all that.;)

But, I suppose, the feeling at the moment is that money is not easy come by, espeically in this eccononic climate, and paying more for the same item when you could get it for way less some miles away is just not on.

Anyway... I will ask around first. Definately.

I was in the Brittas branch of Aquatic Village on Friday, my first time in there...I didn't get a chance to ask one of the lads there about tanks...it was quite busy.

(Plus they had the most amazing Rams but they were not for sale - they were two sets of breeding pairs..I spent the entire time just gazing at them! :cheer: )

Anyway, I'm looking forward to going back to see them again... maybe I'll ask about a tank and stand then. See whats the best price they can do.

Okay, I'm rambling here now!!
