Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

What is the tank?
Can you test the water?
What fish do you have?
What filtration and lights?

You have to checkl your water chemistry, platy's are fairly flexible but angels may be a problem,I really can't stress enough that you have to check your water chemistry, but if you live near your fish shop area you should be OK

Can I suggest you read some of the articles here telling about setting up a new tank - this will explain more fully how you must go about it, you really must get your new water 'cycled' - as we know and love the term - now.
If your water is white (cloudy?) things really are not right.
The first thing you must do is to make a fairly large water change - even as much as 33% - tonight, then the same again for the next week, gradually reducing the amount each time.
Reduce drastically the amount of food you are giving them, don't feed anything for at least three days - the fish won't starve.
And, please...but a water test kit - it REALLY is essential, test the water before doing a change it won't do any harm to test it again afterwards too.
You have made a good start by asking on this Forum, there are some very helpful people here who are only too willing to help you out.
Good luck with this problem. And don't be hesitant about asking for help, we all started at some point and needed help, it's just that for some of us that starting point was a lot longer ago than for others of us!

Sorry to hear about your problems.
I see that you are based in Galway and would gladly come up to you to help only I am away from Galway at the moment.
I could advise you to go to AquaPaws, one of this forum's sponsors. They are based in Galway city (William Street West), between the Crane Bar and Massimo's.
You might want to bring a sample of water with you for them to test it.
Gavin or Peter should be able to get out up and running in no time and advise you on what additional equipment to purchase if needed.
There are a lot of things to learn when you start fish keeping but once you have a little knowledge, it makes it easier to learn more. You'll get there!! and you'll see, it's just totally addictive

Keep the last Thursday of January (29/01/09) free - you can join us at the next meeting of the Connaught Fish Keeping Society (CFKS)!

You have got some expert advice from JohnH, Derek and Valerie!
Water changes are alwaysYour first course of action with a problem in your tank, stress coat or any water conditioner should be used each time.
A simple guide "if it don't look right, smell right its not right" so do a water change. This is your first action!
get a good test kit but till then water changes!
And always feel free to ask us a question We all experienced these problems when started.
