Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Where can I get my hands on some of this?

Hi all,

I’m looking for a certain type of gravel and I wonder does anyone know where I can get some this week?

If anyone has been in the AV in Brittas they actually have the very stuff I’m after in one of their tanks on the counter…the small tank with the blue tetra & angel fish in it. Maybe someone would know the one I’m talking about?

Anyway, I believe it’s called Black quartz gravel/sand. Or it could possibly be Brown quartz gravel, as it doesn’t look jet black so I’m not sure. All I know is that is very small rounded gravel, not jagged, and when the light shines on it can have a dark brown glass like appearance.

Unfortunately they didn’t have it for sale in Brittas, so I’m wondering where I could get some?

Anyone know?

Also, it’s for an 84L tank. How much would I need I wonder?

Also, I'm after some Java moss??...didn't see any today.

Edited to say: Having done some more research, I believe the exact stuff I'm looking for is 3M Color Quartz Sand (Grade S) in dark brown

Got a new RIO 300 and have been looking at getting the very same stuff. The tank is sitting right on the counter. Would really like it, I assume I would need 30 kilos or so.

Will pm you if I find it first:)

I would suggest you phone the other Forum sponsors regarding the 'gravel' you're both after.

If you look at the offer on the Forum from the other day, Lazerus, you will see a member offering Christmas Moss. In my opinion it isn't very different from Java Moss and grows in exactly the same way - at least mine did.

Is this gravel the same as what they have as a substrate in most of the show tanks in the back, looks black with a brown / gold fleck in it???
If it is the same stuff i was going to use it in my own tank but i was told it was Hailey Fine Black Gravel?

Anyone else ever use this and if so any comments on its use??

Cheers

GB

Hi all...yes, Puggy, its the stuff in the tank on the counter in AV in Brittas. They also have in a few of their other tanks too.

It great looking gravel...brownis/blackish and glassy. Not jet black like Black 'Roman Gravel'.

The 3M ColourQuartz sand I mentioned before, that comes in two grades....Grade T which is a bit bigger and Grade S which is like sand only not so light.

I'm hoping to keep some corys and apparently the Grade S would be perfect from what I read. This sand can be got in America, but not so sure of our chances here. Its a builder providers who stock them mostly. So some phone calling is required!

Also, not sure how it does with planted tank...I'll research further into it.

Plus one more thing, I need to find out if it messes with the pH. I notice alot of people I read who use it, use it for African Cichlid tanks.

GerryBerry...I'll also see what I can find on the Hailey Fine Black Gravel. That sounds promising!!!:cheer:

John H...Thanks for the heads up on the Christmas moss...I'll look into that a bit later!;)

I shouldn't even be online...should be making the school lunch!!!ha,ha!:P

Well, I called into the Fish Bowl this afternoon and yes Louis, they do have the gravel I'm talking about in their tanks. It looks really lovely!

Unfortunately, they don't have any for sale. Special order.

They also have another type of sand there too, its really small gravel like little tiny round balls, but not as light & silty as aquarium sand. I was very tempted as it would be still perfect for Corys, only thing is its a natural tan colour & in the tank of water it actually looks even lighter, like beach sand...nice too though.

Anyway....lots to consider!;)
