Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Everyone.
How often should I do water changes & how much should I change ?

Did a water test today and the results were as follows.
Ph 6.9
Amonia,Nitrate & Nitrite were all at the low levels.

My tank is new (4 weeks)& holds about 200lts. We also have with it an Aqua One External filter & a 300watt glass heater. My fish stock is 2 Catfish, 2 Swordtails & 2 Thick lipped Gourami.

Regards.
Tony.

Replied by john gannon (john gannon) on topic Re:Water Changes ?
its generally done once a week with a 10% change.if you get a gravel cleaner you can stir up your gravel while doing it.
ammonia and nitrite should be zero you may need to do some daily water changes to get them down

hi tony,
i disagree somewhat with john and ian. at those stocking levels 10% weekly would be fine, however when your tank has more fish the norm is 25% weekly. your amonia and nitrite levels should be at zero. If they are not and you have fish in the tank then personally id do 20% daily and keep feeding to a minimum until both amonia and nitrite test give readings of zero.

Hi Everyone.
Thank you for your advice.
Amonia & Nitrite levels are at zero but I have noticed a little cloudyness in the water. Not much but a little.
Has this something to do with the temp of the water which is just under 26 degrees or is it perhaps the thickness of the glass.
Regards.
Tony.

Hi
the cloudy water could be the early sighs of algae or it may be that the stones/sand were not wash compleaty and the fish are doing as fish do and it is in your water the filter will remove

if it is algae i would look at the length of time you have your lights on

check your readings daily for now and change your water accordingly this will only apply in the start up stage approx 6 weeks but this may vary see it as a guide not a rule.

Cloudyness could be due to tank not fully cycled best you keep feeding at a minimum and make daily partial water changes

Hi Mickey.
Thanks for that.
The stones were washed well in hot water in a strainer before use to make sure that any dust etc was washed out.
The lights are on for about 9 hrs a day from about 9am to 6 or 7 pm. We have them on a timer.
When I say cloudy I don't mean very cloudy just a slight haze. The tank is only about a month old so I understand that it will not have settled down or cycled properly yet.I plan to do a 20% water change this weekend.
Thanks to everyone for their advice & help so far.
Regards.
Tony.
