Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I am not sure if a bedroom might take the load of a large tank.Would it be an unsafe move to try and put a tank upstairs.

Hi orca
depends on a few things
1-what size the tank ie;how heavy is the tank

2- what are you putting it onto ..? a cabinet would spread the load better than a box iron frame, that said in the past i've had 3 and 4 foot tanks on box iron frames in bed rooms in the past

3- what type of floor is in the bedroom,I have seen some houses where the bedroom floors have been made of chipboard, also bear in mind that most bathrooms are upstairs and the floor can hold the weight of a bath full of water altho that's not for 24/7

Hi Lar,

I would like a tank of 100lts or so if i could get away with it or maybe more but i would have a great fear of what weight the floor could take 24/7.

That feng shui would not work for me.I dont need one nice painted wall and lights with dimmer switches to relax and get a good sleep just give me a large tank with nice fish and i will put the lights on and relax.

There is a 1500l aprox water tank sitting in all our attics and attic joists do not have the same strength as floor joists. you would need a Vbig tank to cause any stress. Place the tank accross a few joists if it is very big and are worried.

Orca you have been in my attic with tanks holding a combined volume of more than 870ltr's.
That's not including storage tanks for RO, RO waste and the storage tank for the house.

You should have no problem with 100 ltrs.:)

Hi Orca,
yes i would agree cool idea.

basic rule 1lt of water is 1Kg weight

thus 100lt is 100 kg
but allow 25% extra for stock equip and decor 125kg
for marine allow about 50% 150Kg

sheet of ply 6mm under it to spread the weight
i would also suggest some quadrant moulding to take the edge off and save your toes!!

i would add 25% on the ply so for a four foot have the ply five more if possiable!!
