Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have looked at a few digital ph meters on the web and they look good but i would like to find out if anyone on the forum might use one.I have seen a few that are the size of a digital thermometer that have your tank temp and ph on display and a few that have the probe.I would be looking for some insight on which works best or is more accurate.

I bought one of these off ebay and its brilliant.
its accurate to 0.001
came from japan
and cost €18 to get including p and p.

One tip is if you get one dont leave it on all the time because it wastes the battery within a week.just turn it on when you want to check it.
if you want any more info just ask me

Hi Mickey,
Could you give me any info on the meters that use the calibrating fluid.I have seen them online and think they would be great for anyone lucky enough to have more than 5 or 10 tanks.I was looking at the ones you can just leave in the tank like a digital thermometer.Which type would be more accuret.

I see that peter well done.I have looked on ebay and might get an order in soon.I still have to get more info on which type would be better for me.I have four tanks in the house and thinking would it be better to have one in each tank or one large higher spec one that you can move from one tank to the other.

I am not sure how hard the calibrating is but as you will find when it comes to fishkeeping you read all you can and take all the advice you can get.

there are several kinds of ph meters ranging from 10 to 100 euros. the most accurate is the type with the probe on a cable
(such as pinpoint) but the most convenient is the pen type which i use. they are quite accurate and versatile, particularly if u
have several tanks and they cost between 20 to 30. pm sent.

30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish

Derek / Peter
Do your meters not need to be calibrated every 6 months or so...? I've used Ph meters in work before for testing cooling water around injection moulds,we used to use buffer solutions to calibrate the meters,
buffersolutions -- www.biconet.com/testing/phbuffer.html ,
for an idea of whats involved read thefirst 2 paragraphs of this pdf here -
www.bghydro.com/mmbgh/Others/How%20do%20...0my%20pH%20meter.pdf
...It's not difficult to do but it should be done othewise you could be getting misleading readings from the meter.
