Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Filter Question

Hi all, have Fluval 4+ and cleaned it out tonight for first time. The tank was already established when I bought so not sure when it was last done. It was very dirty and clogged. The was two white sponges in it and between the sponges was what looked like a long cotton wool pad. I couldn't get the filter open and went to the pet shop and he told me what to do. He showed me one in the shop but it didn't have the cotton wool thing in it. Can anyone tell me what it is and is it necessary. I took it out because it was really filthy, did I do the right thing at all, and shoud I replace it with a new one. I did notice that the flow from the filter was much stronger when this was removed. Is this normal. Sorry for going on but just learning

Thanks for that Acara, after reading that I think I did it right, but it still didn't mention the flat cotton wool thing, was I right to remove it do you think? I cleaned the sponges out in the water I removed from the tank (I was doing a 10% water change) Hope I didn't do any damage!

I dont have that particular filter, but they're all similar.I doubt you'd have done much harm,as long as the main ones are there still. Some people put in their own bits and pieces of media. When I clean my internals,I only clean one sponge at a time,or if they're real bad, clean one and give the 2nd a quick squeeze, just to get rid of the worst of it.I never do a 'full' clean on a filter thats in use.I presume you did it in tank water and not tap water?
Sorry for taking the easy way out and copying the link, but it was a start.

You can get filter floss in your LFS and put it under the top basket in your filter, that’s where I put it in mine; it removes the fine particles of dirt

It looks like this

Cheers LB that's exactly what it looks like, thanks for that, will see how I get on over the next week or so, trying to stabilize water at the moment but not too serious at the moment (I think), so hopfully gettin the filter sorted will help. What benefit does the extra film of filter have on the over condition of the tank. Hope that's not a stupid question just woundering?

it mainly is a finer floss to take out fine particles suspended in the water and in effect polishes the water, Acara's advise is a sound method to use, and your doing it right by cleaning it in tank water thats been removed.. keep it up and remember theres no stupid questions here but some stupid answers do arrive on occassion ;)

But that’s usually from people that mean well but have been given bad advice themselves ;)

Thanks sheag35, I take it by "polish the water" you mean keeping it crystal clear. My tank water is quite clear but I feel it could be better. I am doing a 10% daily water change to stabilise water conditions at the moment and I'm putting it down to that. Am I on the right track or do I need to add anything to the water...(I am adding water conditioner every third change) Also do you know if their is a certain water flow rate at which the water comes out of the filter. (hope you know what I'm trying to say) I have it on a slow rate, but should I have bubbles coming out of it.....

Hi Gwen,
You were right to dump that cotton pad when you don't know how long they it was there! they can be washed in tank water two or three times but my self and others found that they do brake down and become a danger to fish plus they pollute the water at this stage.

You can get the proper pad or use the Jewel pads to replace it fold to desired size. the filter floss is not suitable if you but to much in when you go to open the filter may cause problems.

All tap water must be treated before adding to your tank or aerated for 24 hours before adding to remove choramine and chlorine if you have time and space both. if you can prepare water in advance this will allow it to heat up and give the conditioner time to work to its max ability.
