Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I am trying to figure out what other cichlid would do wel in my planted tank, I have a pair of kribs, 6 odessa barbs 9 cory's and a blue gourami. I was thinking myself of keyholes, I tried GBR's but that was a disaster, any suggestions?

what happened with the GBR's?

If you're going to be crazy, you have to get paid for it or else you're going to be locked up.

They were sick when I got them, died within days of each other and infected my tank wich resulted in half my kribs dying:angry:

Quarantine them this time around and see how they go. They are wonderful fish I think. Your correct however in that they arent the best of travellers when it comes to surviving the trip always from the shop. Ive had mixed results with them also but Ive been lucky in the past few times. I love Rams.

why not try some of the apistogramma species they are stunning and very peaceful, but yes advise getting a quarentine tank to prevent future disasters

Bolivian Rams are much sturdier than the smaller varietys IME.
Never lost one in transit (or shortly after) yet.

Hi,
A.cacatuoides are really nice and quite sturdy.Another interesting one is A.mcmasteri, they get a little larger than A.cacatuoides, completely different colours and patterns, worth checking.

The only thing that would be of concern IMO is the breeding P.kribensis.The female is very dedicated to her fry and can proove herself quite agressive.
The presence of other cichlid in the tank could make her even worst.the tank is quite large but still i'd keep an eye on the protective mother.

the las fry got syphoned out the first day they were free swimming, an I am thinking of making more of a divide in my tank by planting higher in the middle and putting the krib's spawning cave on the far site (it is in the midlle now, the funny looking thing with the x-mass moss attached on either side)

hi again:)
moving their cave sounds like a good idea!
cave on one end tall plants in the middle to divide the surface area
and break visual contact.it will be very interesting to see everyone's behaviour in this layout:)
good luck and let us know how that goes for ya.

i dont think you should put dwarf cichlids in with breeding kribs.
you could try a couple of angels. rams require soft acid water.

i dont think so as they would occupy the same space as the kribs.the angels are mid to top dwellers.
