Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

After two years of fishkeeping i have decided to move away from the community tank and I am going to try my hand at multies (later on different cichlids - if successful).

I am going to use crushed coral and escargot shells (the only decor) in the tank. I think the rule of thumb is one per fish until they pair off - am I right.

I have done alot of research into this but before I set up the tank is there anything I need to watch out for?

What type of buffering should I go with as I want to keep it a stable as possible!

Thanks,

Leonie

Hi Leonie,
All this seems alright, maybe add a few Anubias for a bit of green.
as for buffering coral sand or crushed coral plus escargot shells should be sufficient to keep pH above 7 probably more like 7.5.at least a square foot per pair also seen them in much tighter situations.
hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the help. i got some coral sand and have some crushed coral at home. If it was to raise the Ph to 7.5 would this be ok for multies as literature states the ph should be 8.6?

Would the crushed coral and sand keep the ph at that level indefinately regardless of the water changes?

Thanks.

Would you believe I gave away 12 multies for free only a couple of weeks ago...

I kept them at PH 7.6 with no issues.

They are interesting fish in terms of their behaviour but quite bland in terms of colour.

They can move an impressive amount of sand around the tank !

How big is the tank? They are v small, would be lost in a big tank.

Hi,

So it seems a Ph of 7.5 is acceptable for them. It is only a 40l tank and they have been tank bred (the one i am getting).

I am a bit confused as to how the Ph levels stays at 7-8 even though water changes are been done, would this not cause the ph levels to drop?

I am starting the cycling today or tomorrow so will keep you all posted!!

7.5 is fine.

PH drops can cause total wipeouts of the tank so the fact it doesn't drop is a good thing !

What is your PH out of the tap?

The PH out of the tap is 7 so hopefully I can get it up!! With the Womens mini marathon at the weekend I never got a chance to set up the tank. Hopefully by mid June I will have it up and running!!
