Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin
white spot ???????
somebody help me !!!!!!!!!
i set up a rekord 120 a while ago
all the fish in it are small and young
there are about 30 baby geophagus, 2 hoplo cats, 5 young frontosa, 3 or 4 kribs, 5 or 6 angels, some paradise fish,a jewel cichlid, a few little cory's, a soft shell turtle, 3 asian sole, a baby redtail catfish, a little gar and well i think that's them all
some lovely little fish
i usually just keep the bigger fish, so am enjoying the change...
anyway i added 3 little silver dollars in the the other day and i noticed about an hour ago that they all have white spot
i added a treatment and turned the heater up to 29
is this the right action to take ?
how high should i have the temperature and for how long ?
is the tank way over stocked ?(i think i know the answer to that one already)
is that the cause of the problem ?
would it be enough to remove the 30 geophagus or would it still be over stocked ?
any advice would be greatly apprechiated as i am very fond of those little guys, ya know
regards

I think theres a few issues there, you've got fish that require different water paramaters there,eg hoplos, corys, geophagus, require softer water, whereas the frontosa would be harder water.
Also, and I know nothing of them, but I would think that turtles wouldnt mix too well with fish, although,as I said,I have no experience there.
Also, and I know they're all small, but that tank is SEVERELY overstocked.Maybe getting away with it at the moment, but they will grow.
The red tail cat will require a monster tank of its own,it will finish off the rest in no time.
As for the white spot, again, something I have no experience of,thankfully.Others will advise better than I can.Hope you get it sorted successfully. What was the treatment, that will help those who will answer.

and the cause may well have been the new fish added but i reckon all them fish in such a small tank may also play a hand in it
what size are the Geophagus and what type are they

as far as i know
pkearny would be able to tell you, i bought a breeding pair off him the other day, beutifull fish, he gave me a net full of their babies with them
they're only tiny, the biggest about 2cm
you can have a load of them if you want
i hope i don't loose 'em, i know their living conditions aren't ideal

No offence but it is a very bad mix of fish.
29c should be fine but this dosent always work with all strains of white spot. Also you dont mention what type of Cory's they are. They may not like the high temp. at all.
Waterlife protozin is a good treatment but you may not be able to use this on the sole.
If i was to divide these fish up this is what i would try. Not guaranteed to work but wort trying.
Depending on size i would put the young Geophagus in a tank on there own.
I would put the frontosa on there own because they are a rift valley cichlid and need hard water.
The turtle should be on it's own.
The redtail and gar together. The silver dollers might be ok with these for a week or two.
The paradise fish might go with the juwel cichlid and the corys. Just keep an eye on the paradise fish.
The Angels, kribs, sole, hoplo's should mix ok.
You certainly have your work cut out. Hope it all ends up ok.
Darren.

hope all works out well for you.. if i remember anything else i'll post more.. ps if you do split these fish up treat all tanks, and i'd have the tanks with no substrate until the whitespot is guaranteed gone, as when the cysts burst on the fish the eggs of the whitespot parasite fall into the substrate, hatch and the cycle continues again and again..
hope this helps

That is some great collection of fish....

But the out break is due to the mix of different fish with different living conditions as platty said before. I have used protozin before and its great stuff, i recommend it highly.
I had a huge out break in my tank about 4months back and lost so many fish, i was away for 3 days came home and every fish was covered.
I would separate the fish as platty said and go from there......
You might even see other illness in ur fish due to the mix in the tank so just keep a close eye on the tank
If ur stuck for space, i have some space in a 60l tank which has nothing in it at the minute.
