Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Lost 2 Catish & 1 Plec Today :(

Hi All,

I lost 2 Cory's and my Ancistrus Lemon Plec today :(

I added numerous small Cardinals last Thursday. They were very small and I think 1 may have died and been in the tank for a day or two amongst the java moss.

Did a large water change last week so water should be fine.

I noticed when feeding the Tetea Variety Wafers last night that one didnt drop down to the bottom of the tank for some amount of time. Not sure if it was bad food they got?

Strange thing is I have some Neons and Harlequins and they are all fine and feeding well tonight.

It's just annoying losing so many in a short space of time and they were all bottom dwelling fish.

Anybody any idea on what might have happened or have any suggestions?

Cheers to all :)

Tank is up and running over 2 years.

I only have the Tetra strips to test the water and I know they don't always give accurate readings. So here we go:

PH 6.4
NO3 25
NO2 1
GH 9

Can anyone suggest anything from these results?

Another catfish looks like it's about to die. I don't know what is going on.

All other fish appear fine which is very strange.

First step,
A fairly large water change (quick fix for 'mysterious' fish losses, which often will, at least, stem the tide in the short term).

Can you say if there were any untoward markings on your fish which died? (red blotches under the skin etc) but as your other fish seem OK I sort of suspect a water issue - sounds a bit similar to the problems the lad with the Pandas was having last week...
We have seen problems in the past where water companies have done 'some messing' with pipes and used some sort of unpleasant chemical to flush the pipes through. OK, I'll agree, this may be a bit of 'straw clutching' but we have to try to look at all potentials.
Has your tap water seemed at all 'different' in the past little while?

Bottom dwelling fish losses could point toward a build-up of heavy metals in your water, this really isn't an easy one to assess.

In the meantime, if you do have another tank available you might want to move any other Catfish you have into it.

Hi John,

Thank you for the reply.

It is a strange one alright. In the past when I had a bad loss of fish (which I believe was the issue with water companies flushing the pipes) the Harlequins and Neon's were hit badly and the catfish survived ok.

I will do a large water change later tonight and keep an eye on things.

Just monitoring the tank now one of my Bronze Cory's seems pretty distressed darting around the bottom of the tank so you might be correct with the heavy metals in the water.

Thanks again :)
