Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Tank Dilemma

Hey guys, I have a dilemma.

I have finally gotten my hands on 2 tanks that were left to us by her indoors' late uncle. However through shipping, handling, and sitting for about a year in storage, they are damaged.

One has a bad ish crack in one of the side panels.
The other had a smallish crack on the front (Deadly I thought, I'll fix that and fire it to the back) but the back is shattered completely.

The way I see it, I have 3 options.

1) Bin them
2) Fix the not so bad one with the bad one
3) Pass them on to someone else, either through here or another site.

Any ideas?

They're 70l tanks. (I didn't know what size they were until I got them, I was told they were huge  )

the glass shouldn't be that expensive to try a repair, have a ring around and get some quotes for the size of glass you need. the silicone is not expensive ye might be able to fix it for very little.

Might give the glass place a shout to find out. Had intended on dismanteling one, to fix the other, but if I fixed the 2...

Hmm.

Depending on the size of the cracks, you could talk to Autoglass about them. They might be able to do you a cash deal on that stuff they pump into cracks which gives the same hardness as a perfect piece of glass.

Course it might just be cheaper to buy a new tank if you dont have all the filters etc already. I think you can pick up a (new) 60L for around 100 quid with all the kit you need to get a tropical tank up and running.

exactly, 2 is always better than one. i was pondering building a tank a while ago and i emailed blackrock glass, here is the quote i got for the sheets of glass for a tank around 125L

3 of 50cm X 50cm
2 of 50cm X 47.8cm
2 of 47.8cm X 3cm

6mm €103 inc vat
10mm €161 inc vat

Neil0r, I know, I already have one 60l running, and I was promised these 2 "huge" fish tanks. I had intended keeping one, and flogging one to help fund the setup of the first one.

This just threw those plans out the window.

Irishfirepics, thanks. I'll investigate this, although I know what herself will say, I have enough half finished projects lying around the house, what with the downstairs bathroom being taken up with a half finished 4 ft bearded dragon tank, and other such crap.

Jaysis, and I thought I was the only one who had to deal with that kind of stuff :-)
