Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I think all the sponsor's contact details are on the site here. Your best bet would probably be to ring around. I've been around to most of the shops at this stage though and I know that Aquatic Village in Tallaght have some non fish stuff.

Also Kinsealy pet store have LOTS of unusual pets so that could be a good starting spot too.

Patty, will reply in more detail tomorrow, however just be cautious that turtles can spread alot of nasties such as salmonella so if you have young kids also, its vital they wash their hands and the like after handling them or if the turtles come into contact with area's in common use.
I owned them for a few years and am always intrigued by them, what type did you buy?
Have you a heater and pad for them to get to the surface? Also mind your fingers, they give a nice bite!!
Would love to see some pictures,I really like turtles but haven't had one now in years. Still miss the cute buggers!

Pattymayo, There is a limit to the size of pictures you can put up on the site. Your best bet is to load it up somewhere on a picture hosting site (Photobucket.com for example) and link back to it on your post.
Hope this helps.

I would recommend a heater,if you have platty's you should have a heater anyhow.
Also ideally a heat lamp and a place for him to perch and bask if you like but they are more likely to bask as they get older however Im not 100% sure on this to this, when they are younger they prefer to stay in the water alot so you might not need a heat light, perhaps someone will clarify it here. Also when younger make sure the water isnt too deep, they are bottom walkers but like to be able to pop up with ease and making the water abit shallower can help them and make sure you have some spots he can climb onto and hold on etc.(maybe a turtle dock or corkbark). When they get older they actually prefer deeper waters. I know it sounds like alot of hassle, but Im one of those who thinks turtles and fish shouldnt necessarily be mixed,I personally think turtles are best kept to species tanks however Its complety my own opinion only and I know there are others out there who have and do successfully keep them with fish. This is complety up to you,and having fish in the tank wont effect his health or happiness so Im certainly not trying to steer you in either direction, however they are carnivourous and would eat fish!! He's only small now which is cute, but they do poo alot also,so its important to do regular changes and have good filteration but make sure the current isnt to strong for him,but as I said when he is that small it isnt going to be too much work! I really envy you having this little guy, I used to love them when I was younger and still want to have them but dont have the room etc..
Put some more pics up please! Also can you pm me the price of him if you dont mind.

Thanks

Gavin

thanks again fishowner..
Yes i have a water heater.. just havnt got one of them lamps..
yea he has a nice place to bask.. and i dont have the water even half filled in the tank
i heard that they can drown or die of exhausten from tryin to swim to the top..
if they water is 2 deep..he definetly spends most time under the water,
ive rarely seen him on his rock...
im after uploading some pics of my set up..see what you think??
The only reason i have the fish in with the turtle... is because my brother gave me the
tank which the babies where in.. and if i put them in my fish tank..
i dont think they'd last a day.. my fish would have no problem catchin them and eatin them...
unlike my turtle he is too slow... im going to wait for the fish to get older
and bring them 2 my local pet store but until then they are company for Todd :)
They are great little creatures.. when i seen them in the pet store last week i just fell in love with them and wanted one straight away... but i went home.. did alot of research on them..
i read practilly every thing on the internet.. forums etc..
I want another one but in the long run.. i dont think id have the space!!
Do you think they are ok to keep on there own??
would he get lonely???
Ive also pm'd you the price :)

Hi,
Your set up looks great!and as Gavin says, when they're young they only leave the water very rarely.
as for having a second one,if you end up with a male and a female, the male can be a bit agressive during breeding season...he can be a bit like a male guppy, insisting.we've had eggs as well but found out too late to put in incubator:( .

I personally like pellets for turtles rather than the mixed type food but you have to be sure that it's a good quality complete diet.and also, you can give him a frozen turtle food which they love.it's a bit messy though and you don't wanna give too much of it or else he would give up on the pellets.

say once every week???
is he ok to take out and handle??
or should i just leave him be????

That's exactly what we do,pellets everyday and frozen once a week.
handling these turtles, personally i don't apart from cleaning time.
Saying this,i think every turtle is different(also musks are a shy specie compared to yellow belly for ex) so it's something to try,i'd try and handle Todd just before feeding so he might associate it with feeding time not that he try eat your fingers but he'd know food is just after?and so only for a short period of time to start with and see how gets on.
best of luck.
