Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

just got a free 250 litre tank of a mate, but there is no filter. Any suggestions with a farely reasonable price. Its for tropical fish. Can make room for an external, but unsure about the prices for a decent one. Cheers.....Mick.......

Checkout the sponsors for their prices Aquatic village will be hard to beat. i would go with an external as they are much better filters and they can,t be seen in the tank, internals only take up space and are an eye sore in my humble opinion.

On a tank that size i would go with somethink like a tetratec ex1200 but it would be down to what stock you plan to put in the tank that will dictate the filtration needed but also over spec your filter as they never perform according to what the manufacturers say.

I have 2 of these ex1200 on my tank but i keep cichlids that are messy buggers so i need high filtration.i think i paid around 130 each but the price might of dropped sinced then

best of luck to you in your setup, you are a lucky f*****er getting a free tank that size;) ;) ;) enjoy

Def go for external.
The Eheim Ecco Pro range are very esb friendly, compared to other filters of the same size.I Havn't used anything other than the Tetratecs, which are brilliant, but will be buying a few soon, and will go for the Eccos, purely for energy consumption.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

personally would recommend the fluval 205 - 405 range . i have found them to be brilliant externals .

i currently run a 405 on my 120 litre tank and must admit its perfect for the job .

most important thing to remember is you can never have too much filtration , so don't worry if the spec of the filter looks too big for the tank you have .

the other thing i have noticed about the fluvals is ( and i'm sure its the same with the other previously mentioned models and makes ) the ease with which spare parts can be obtained

anyway .. just my 2 cents worth

best of luck

I have never bought the Fluvals after hearing too many bad stories about them.It seems that a lot of people have had esperience of them leaking, not enough clips securing them.If you've had no problems, seems you're one of the lucky ones.I guess it's a bit unfair of me to comment,as I havn't owned them, but something to be aware of.

I've been thinking of getting an external filter for some time. My BIG fear is a leak and noise. The eheim ecco is about €75 which seem good value. Would ye consider them to be fairly silent

Have been lookin on the net for various external filters, but I like Acara's choice of Eheim filters simply because they are so energy efficient. The Filter i was interested in is the Eheim Ecco Pro 300, its only 8 watts. Savage,

Any more comments on this choice would be well appreciated....
