Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

What kind of smell is it too? (probably a difficult question to answer but it is relevant)

i'd say its the same smell you get in fish shops. I'd add filter floss and change it every few days. Sounds like your filtration is inadequate or perhaps you have algae. I always find the hair algae stinks if i take it out of the tank (grows on my return pipe and hasn't stopped).

Hello again,
Thanks for the replies, i have a tetratec 2400 and a fluval 4 plus running on it, there is no plants as i removed them because the fish were shredding them, theres no obvious signs of an algae problem(none on glass or decor, will have to check filter pipework) not to sure what the smell is like, musty I'd say. The tank has been going for about 3 months now but the smell has only came in the last few days. Paul you mentioned filter floss how do I go about using that???

Hi Bull
Just check your filters are running I had a situation like this ,I was away for a few days and the external filter was unplugged by mistake when I came back and walked into the room the first thing I noticed was the smell coming from the tank.

If it smells like a fish shop, check for a dead one out of the water, behind the tank etc.... it has happened me before in the fish room and it can be hard to locate the victim, but with one tank it should not be too hard to check. If I am right and it is a rotting fish the smell will go naturally after a few days anyway. But you would still be better retrieving the body!

if it's the water that smells, I'd add activated carbon pads to your filter (If you don't already). They help to chemically clean the water and remove bad odours. If you go this route, they need to be changed every few weeks.

re the smell. just check it is coming from the tank! perhaps the carpet is wet. if filters are working it should be a normal earthy smell at worst
