Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

HI all,

Newbie on the block.

I have been given(for free) a Juwel Vision 260 that I plan to convert into a Marine aquarium.
Down the line I would like to have both fish and corals. I have done a huge amount of reading over the past few weeks on filter and protein skimmers etc etc.

This is where I am at. To start off, I am going to purchase live sand, probably 5 - 10kg of live rock. Thinking of going for the eCO PRO 2036 external filter. Will probably buy the water mixed out of the shop unless anyone can suggest a way to save money. Kills me to spend 80 odd euro on salt water. Would Organic Aqua solve this problem for me or is this only for fresh water.
At this point I will put in a few hardy fish.

Over the next couple of months I plan to put in a protein skimmer and upgrade the lights so that I can have coral. Does anyone have a link to where I can but the lights for the juwel tank. Can see them on zooplus but just not sure exactly which ones will fit. How do the lights work on the tank. In the fish shop they seem to have fluerescent bulbs and also normal(white) type light. Can anyone explain what each are used for.

Thanks in advance.

Steven

Hi Welcom

I think you will need more than 5-10kg of LR, i think it should be 1kg per 10L if you have a 260L tank you will need 26kg of rock. I dont think you will need an external filter as the can build up nitrates, the rock alone is a filter you jusr need plenty of movement over it so a couple of power heads will be needed. i get my salt water from the LFS and it's only €8 for 25L not too bad, you will need 230L if you get 26kg of rock and other accessories in there so about €73. if you want to make it you will need an RO system and a bucke of salt might work out dearer not sure.
Metal Halides are the lights you will need, look on the trading section of the forum there might be some for sale.

you can also go for t5s. but unless you spend 1100euro on a top class systm metal haloids are the way to go. there are two hang ons for sale on the forum at the moment 50each.
i agree with irish firepics and disagree at the same time, i would use an externel, but i would fill it with a bag of activated carbon, a bag of rowa phos and live rock rubble. imo this is the way to go when you have no sump.
also dont add to much live sand just cover the bottom of the tank as deep sand beds will cause nitrates eventually.
another option is to leave it bear and use a blue bottom. dosnt look as well but it will help the water quality.
you will also need plenty of water movement, id go with nano korelis as the produce waves rather than forceful flow which corals wont appreciate. there are actuall 3 for sale on this forum 3x koreli 3s. you will probably bick them up for about 90euro.
as said before you will need at least 1k for every 10liters as this is your filtering systym.try not to buy second hand lr as most of the time it will leak phosphates which will cause you nusince algae probs.
hop this helps

Replied by nailsgrant (Steven) on topic Re:Some advice
Thanks a mil for the advice guys. much appreciated. its a whole lot to take in at the start.

This is where I am at. Have sourced a second hand fluval 305 canister filter and a second hand Deltec Protein Skimmer mce 600.

The next question I was going to ask but I think you may have answered it already. Can I start off with 5k or 10k of live rock and then work up from there. ideally dont want to shell out £260(shop in Belfast sell at £10 per kg) straight away on rock?

Thanks again.

pretty new to marines myself but as the rock is the filtration i wouldn't think so, as you add more over time there will be more die off on the rocks from transportation and when you put that into your tank the ammonia will go up, I could be wrong but i think that's what happens.
