Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello guys I'm new to the hobby and recently got myself a 500 ltr. tank
I intend to keep oscars in it and have a few questions
The PH is high around 8.5 will this drop over time ?
I was given a few rocks for the tank pic of the rock is attached I think its onyx
will this rock be ok for an oscar tank ? or could it be the reason my Ph is high
Thanks in advance
Al

Hi,not sure but i thought onyx was black...
i don't think this is onyx, looks more like some calcareous type rock and i suspect your pH is high because of it....try d acid/vinegar test to check.
500L is a great size for oscars,enjoy!

hey,
yes any vinegar would do,if it fizzes when in contact with the rock it just means that that rock would make the water more alcaline.not a bad rock, just maybe not for your tank...
8.5 pH is very alcaline, extreme for most fish.anything around 7,7.5 for oscars but they're pretty tolerant.

Dimitri your right 7 - 7.5 is ok but disagree slightly ph wise i dont think they are THAT tolerant, well at least NOT enough for 8.5, 8.5 in my honest opinion is way too high for oscars which come from waters in the amazon which is more acidic to neutral maybe a max of 7.5 , add peat or almond leaves to soften the ph and bogwood too once its in the 7-ish ph you should be alright... just my opinion but i kept and bred them years ago in ph 6.8 and they thrived in these conditions

currently 25 tanks, and breeding is the aim of everything i keep

Hey Seamus, you're misreading me there or i'm not expressing myself properly.
i mean 8.5=extreme 7-7.5 for oscars but i stil think they're tolerant enough.we'll agree on 8.5 is not good...not for oscars.

A few people have mentioned using peat in the tank to lower ph
Irish moss peat from local garden center will this do the job ?
Thanks

Yes, make sure you get moss peat or peat moss because these are free of any chemicals ie. fertiliser or pesticides/fungicides .
It will lead to amber coloured water, it will also help soften the water.
Use, ehm, I hate saying this but, ahem, a woman's pop sock or the foot of a womans nylon sock/tights, the fine mesh keeps all but the tiniest particles from polluting the water, just fill whatever you want and cut above the area and tie in a knot. You can either hang it in the Tank or if you have an external, put it in the desired compartment.
Voila!
Kev.
