Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Water Testing - I'm good to go!

`Test the water today and all is good. Everything zero so I'm reckon I'm good to go

Only thing is at the momement all that is in the tank is plants and some wood. Had to put it in a temp place as I was getting some work done at home.

If I move it and put gravel and what not into it will I have to start all over again?

There’s no easy answer here, when you say you’re having to move the tank will you be able to save the water from it? This is crucial as if you have to re-fill it with fresh water you will be risking an overload of the system which might just result in the dreaded “new tank syndrome” (or whatever they call it now).

I think your best bet would (if at all possible) to drain off and collect as much of your cycled water as you are able then re-site your tank with your gravel (washed!!!) then you can carefully replace the plants/wood and eventually the water.

Obviously the gravel will displace some of the water so you will not need to save every drop. However, if you do need to use ‘new’ water you will have to treat it first as putting untreated water might damage the beneficial bacteria you have built up in your filter.

My suggestion would be to re-fill the tank, leave it to stand for 48 hours then check your water perameters, if everything’s fine (and hopefully it should be) after then you should be able to start your stocking regime – but remember…build up your stock GRADUALLY, this really cannot be stressed enough. Also, don’t go overfeeding your fish initially, the bacteria has to adjust to the ever-increasing new loading brought about by your new stock. One last thing – water-changing is really very important – especially in a newly set-up and stocked tank.

Good luck with this venture - let the Forum know how it progresses.

as john said , moving the tank now would be ok if you move it pretty quickly and use the same water to refill it in its new location . Just make sure the filter isn't unplugged or out of the water for too long as this will effect the beneficial bacteria that have already grown inside .

That will be fine - use the existing tank water for the bucket too and, if you have one, use an air pump to aerate the water if the filter is going to be off for any length of time, bacteria should last without too much loss for around an hour this way.

Please don't try to move your tank until you have removed all the water - I tried this and ended up with the seal on the bottom springing a leak (not exactly what you'd be wanting!!!).

Hope all goes well with your task.

How did you go about your cycle? If your getting a reading of 0 for your nitrate, i dont think you've cycled your tank?!

I put a pinch of fish food every couple of days into the thank.

It wasn't a digital reading. I used the api test kit so no exact reading

Was the nitrate reading zero on the liquid test kit? If it was i would leave your tank cycle for another couple of weeks! What i use to cycle my tank is i get a raw lancefish put a string trough it and hang it in the water till i start getting readings for ammonia and nitrite! Your tank then has to show a sign of your nitrate creep and ammonia and nitrite hitting zero! Then your good to go!!!
