Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Ok i am a complete novice and am looking for advice and tips on the best way to keep my tank clean. I have 3 gold fish not sure what type big bulgy eyes do.

I have them a week now and am wondering how often you need to change there water (I have the suppliment to use when adding tap water)

How often you need clean out the tank (also whats the best way to clean the gravel?)

One of them had a little mite on his fin, which i already removed from his fin and treated the tank for so hopefully that will kill any other little creatures that are in the tank.

All advice appreciated
Rob

Best bet is a 10-20% water change every week. The new water will keep your nitrates down.

Best way to clean the gravel is with a gravel vacuum at every water change. You create a syphon into a bucket using it and vacuum the gravel until 20% of the water is gone. Then just top up the tank.

Had a look in the shed and I have a spare vacuum. your welcome to it. No tubing with it but you can buy the green eheim tubing in Aquarium solutions ashbourne. I buy mine there, the other shops may carry it aswell but I don't know

A siphon and an algae scraper are pretty much all you need. There are many types. Also, check out YouTube and VideoJug for great vids and tips :)

You say you have them a week. Most important questions are:

Is the tank cycled?
Is it filtered?

If so well then the above advice is spot on. A 10-20% water change weekly with dechlorinated water, using the gravel vac to remove solid waste from the gravel.

Clean the filter in tank water, never under the tap every 8-10 weeks or when there is a noticable decrease in flow.

Would be worried about the "mite" you removed. The cause of it and the treatment you used. If you medicated the tank ensure the tank is well oxygenated.
