Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi
I am looking for some advice on automatic feeders. I am a beginer and have not yet set up my tank. I am also a shift worker and will not always be there at feeding time. I have seen some automatic feeders on e bay but im not sure if they will be ok to use or good enough?

Hi Alan,
I think it's a good alternative especially when you cannot feed then regularly. I've ordered exactly the same automatic feeder and am waiting for the delivery. Price was at acceptable level and therefore decided to risk and check it.

Hi

Just to say, it's so important to google reviews of the models you choose to buy, some of them allow the food inside to become damp, causing clumping leading to over feeding or worse, clogging, leading to starvation depending on how long you are leaving the House.

Hi Kev,

You're right. According to the producers information , the model I decided to buy, keeps food dry all the time. But this I'll be able to confirm when I get it. I hope their info was not only a slogan. :) Otherwise 15 euro lost but 15 sounds better than 50 (as I found this price in one of the pet chain markets on the way to Dublin). Time will show - hope to get it this week.

I personally think that Automatic feeders have their place in the hobby, for example when you might be away for perhaps a week or longer, but there's no real substitute for manually feeding your fish when you're able. Like Kev says there's the ever present danger of the auto feeder under, or even worse, in my view, over feeding your tank.

If you'll be on shift work and not able to feed your fish at regular interval then feed them when you're able to - at least you'll a] be certain you'll have given them the correct amount and b] get the pleasure of seeing your fish eat their food...personally I still, after all these years, get great enjoyment from seeing the fish eat their food, not to mention the way they 'greet' my arrival in anticipation of being fed.

Fish in the wild don't get food at regular times, they eat as and when it appears.

Just to inform - dispatch received today and I'll start testing it from tomorrow (don't have batteries at home).
John, I do agree with you. Feeding fish gives pleasure and confidence that they ate proper amount of food but automatic feeder is just an 'emergency exit' when we are away. The model I bought seems to be quite good at the first glance: up to 4 feeding times a day, dosage of quantity of served food. I'll give feedback in some days when I test it.

Hi Alan,
I am satisfied with this feeder. Food is not getting wet, it's dry !! but there is an electorstatics effect that causes food stickes to the container walls but it is just enough to knock it and everything works good. For the first week I'd advise you to pay great attention to the feeder to establish proper level of food given to your fish. You shouldn't leave it uncontroled for the first week - just learn to use it. It's worth the money I paid but obviously I wouldn't spend 50 for it. It is good to use it when you are away or haven't time but it won't replace manual feeding and contact with your fish. I.m going to use it in the morning (when I 'm in a hurry) with a minimum quantity of food and then to feed them manually in the afternoon. Generally, I would recommend it for everybody who is very bussy but fish as other animals need contact with us or maybe we need contact with our fish to maintain relationship with them.
