Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Everyone,

I am just at moment looking into setting up my tank as a planted tank. I have a Rio 125. I have an empty tank at the moment with a sand substrate. I am just looking for advice on the best place to buy plants, bogwood etc. Im looking to create a tank that is completely planted especially some of the tanks I have seen that have the really nice looking grass that cover all the bottom.

Also another question is do I need a Co2 system in place to set this up or do I stick to certain plants that don't need this?? Also the cost of a system like this??

Hope I've made sense but this planted tank stuff is all new to me.
Thanks for any help, greatly appreciated.
Something like below :)

My suggestion is,

www.aquahobby.com/articles/e_plant.php

www.plantedtank.net/

Don't try to sort out planting a tank on a question and answer basis on a forum because you will be overawed by conflicting ideas that will leave you more confused than when you started.

Research it through specific fora that specialise in Plants and maintaining a planted Tank.

Don't get me wrong, there are lots of well experienced guys here that really know their stuff but you need to have an idea of what type of plantscaping you want, start small to see what problems arise like Algae, nutrient deficiencies and go from there, aspire to the beautiful tanks of the famous guys but start off slow and work your way up.

Everything you need for a planted Tank is available in every county in Ireland but they do differ from Store to Store. Plants come in every week or two and vary from basic cold water species to the more exotic ones, find the Plant you want via the Web, find pics and research as much as possible. When you have found your pride and joy, call the shops for availability.

Steer clear of Plants advertised as Aquarium plants but are not i.e. Cordyline, japanese mondo Grass, Peace lily, Chamaeleon plant, there are lots, if you research, you'll weed out the pretenders.

Phew!

Kev.
