Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi all
i have a 20litre tank and i have read about dwarf puffers and some ottos and what i have read said that a dwarf puffer would be fine in a 20litre tank but people here seem to know a hell of a lot more than sites and lfs. i want the tank to have live plans because aparently they really like it and is much better for them but im afraid that the bottom layers needed for live plants is gonna take up to much room and not leave enough water space for the puffer. so please let me know. and any other info for the small tank would be greatly appreciated.I'm setting up the tank tomorrow filter air stone and heater get the cycle going but wont be adding any fish till the end of the month

some might remember me for seeking advice on my 60 litre tank which i set up before joing this forum. i had 2 oscars 1 bala shark 1 albino frog 2 common plecos 2 angel fish and one leopard pleco. WELL the oscars killed everything bar 1 common pleco and the lepoard pleco. i've added a spinny eel and they all seem to be getting on fine and seem much happier. I've taking some pictures which hopefully il get the chance to put them up tonight so you can see what its like and you's can give me advice if needed.

thanks again for all your help guys its really appreciated!!!!
regards. DEREK

I just started setting up a 40L for dwarf puffers.. im only using a thin layer a sand and will be using live plants. Im going to use pygmy chain swords as they dont need deep substrate.. and im also using cabomba and vallis at the back... i raised the sand level at the back and placed rocks in front.. bit like a rockery. Im placing one piece of bogwood and tying Java fern a moss to it...

mmmmm Id try rehome all the fish in the 60L and start from scratch... maybe get sum advice on which fish might suit a 60L. Common pleco's n oscars get to big. I have a common pleco thats nearly as big as ur tank:laugh:.

Im not sure if Vallis and Cabomba are suitable for 20L.... im sure sum1 else will suggest more suitable plants. But Java fern and maybe sum java moss wud be nice on bogwood,, and sum chain sword in front. these plants dont grown to big so there wud be room for puffers.

Most of the Dwarf Puffers I can think of are actually fish which prefer a proportion of salt in the water to make it equate to 'Brackish' conditions as they are estuarial fish in nature. I have kept them in completely fresh water on many occasions but they do seem to do better in slightly salty conditions.
This makes plant selection a little more difficult if you go down this route.
Some of the Pygmy Puffers come from entirely Fresh Water and would be more beneficial in many ways, including the lack of a need for any Salt.
These have been discussed several times before on the Forum, try entering Pygmy Puffer into the "Search Forum" facility top right), you should locate the postings there.
Personally I find these to be quite engaging little fish but mine will not eat any prepared foods - although they will occasionally have a nibble at frozen Bloodworms and Brine Shrimps they really seem happiest when eating freshwater snails. They find it hard to 'chew' into the shells of the so-called 'Trumpet' snails although I have witnessed them attacking the meat of the snail when it appears from the shell to move.
They are quite nippy - especially with 'prey' which are slow-moving so perhaps you would find lumps missing from the Otocinclus you plan to have in the tank. My advice would be to just have four or five Pygmy Puffers - you'll find them entertaining enough on their own (just as long as you can provide enough snails for them).

These Pygmy Puffers only grow to around 1" total length.

There is quite a lot of 'posturing' that goes on between them but if the tank is fairly well planted with bits and pieces of cover for retreats you should be fine with four (or five at a pinch) - but you really would need to get the tank set up and well established before adding the fish.
