Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

A few questions i need answered please.

Keeping fish about 3 months now and in the last two days ive had my second case of whitespot and its doing my head in, first off i have a betta lifespace tank and i have a feeling im doing something wrong in the sump. Can anyone tell me if i should be doing something different, so the first section on the left is where my dirty water comes down and through a sump sock then it makes its way through a sponge and underneath the first divider, now the middle section the water has to come back up through a load of bio balls and another sponge and then flows over and under to section three were it is pumped back into the tank is this correct. Also my water is clear but always has stuff floating around it which i assume is algae and everytime i switch the pump off and on i see a load of this same crap shooting out of it. Hope someone can help me out with this. Another thing is im not sure if im feeding my fish the correct amount, Ive got 4 knife fish, 2 severums,2 firemouths,2 armored cats,1 jaguar cat, 1 geophagus, 2 eels and 1 royal pleco(all fish are still young so not that big). What i feed them is 1 bloodworm cube,1 brine shrimp cube and a pinch or two of catfish pellets daily. Is this too much or too little. Or is there something else i should be feeding them. Im also looking to get hold of a 15 gallon water drum if anyone knows where i could get one. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out

Ye filter sounds alright,,, Its prob fish crap and plant debris floating around tank.. is the first sponge a white one,,,? this is meant to catch the crap.. i rinse it every week. second sponge green?

As for ur fish.. well its certainly a mad mix... And not the usual fish for sum1 starting out...

Knife fish, Eel, armored catfish and geophagus is a bit general. Do u know the exact names of the fish... ?

How big is the tank....?

Im not to sure which fish u have but it doesnt sound like ur overfeeding... around what size are they..

As for Firemouth... I feed mine cichlid pellets, flake food and frozen foods.. (bloodworms, fish ect..) varied diet is better.

Eel.. I have a Fire Eel and i only feed him once or sometimes twice a week... they are very picky, Mine only eats tiger prawns and live worms. are urs eating bloodworms?

I think what Alex may be talking about sounds like the juwel filter, generally your sumps first chamber is coarse sponge or bio balls to catch the heavy stuff, then next to last is fine filter media to catch fine particles, last chamber generally for heater and return pump, maybe you don't have it in the correct positions check recommended setup for a sump should have come with it, whitespot may not have been cleared totally from first outbreak as spores from ich hatch in gravel, did u go full course of treatment??, also I've found a uv steriliser on the return kills the free swimming stage of ich before it attaches to a host... Hope this helps
