Oxygenation

Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

How would you oxygenate a 350l tank that would have jack dempseys jewel and convict
It will have an Eheim 2217 external filter.

If you really feel the need to have air in the tank you have two options (conveniently) - one would be to have an airstone powered by an aeration pump, the second would be a diffuser connected to the end of your filter outlet Basically the passage of water passing through the unit 'draws in' air and the whole output mixes, air and water, and highly aerated water returns to the tank. You could also consider the filter's Spray Bar pointed at the water's surface, this will create a great deal of turbulence which in turn will add to the oxygen content of the water.
Really it's down to what you would prefer.
I'm still a little concerned about you choice of stock, but at the end of the day it is your choice, after all.

Yeah I've been reading up on the stock and I'm unsure now
There was a site I had found that lists the compatibility of the fish and I'm trying to find that again and see what it said and I'll go from there. It will be still a good 5-6 weeks before and fish are bought
As for the oxygen what benefits does it have over doing none of the things you listed?

If you use the spray bar (which - I believe - still comes with the filter) it will keep the surface 'active' and, so long as you don't overstock, that will really be more than sufficient (although I have a real liking for the diffuser).
Air bubbles from a pump are aesthetically pleasing, but in truth, do not do a great deal to add oxygen to the water - if the experts are to be believed.
I would say try the spray bar and if that suits your needs then that will be as good a way as either of the other options, perhaps others would care to comment?

ok, let's throw an Ember into this, is aeration better from below or above? I have also heard that bio wheels are great Oxygenators and also that Cannister filters need high o2 to function properly.

I suppose with gaseous exchange happening at the surface its more important to have adequate surface agitation but on the other hand if the tank is getting enough 02 either way, does it really matter? As for the canister filters, they can go anerobic in minutes of being turned off and require oxygenated water moving through them constantly to prevent the culture from dying off. When doing maintenance I drain them completely and leave the trays in the open air and just drizzle water over them to keep them from drying out until Im done. I wouldnt leave them sitting in a canister full of still water out of fear of oxygen deprivation. I may come across as a bit of a flapper in this regard but Im sure you remember the time I came home to find a tank full of dead Tiger Barbs...air good, no air bad

You can have end to end flow, faster flow possible this way or just the normal circulation, from a top down view of the tank, around corner to corner in a circle.
With the spray bar end to end, the flow hits the end of the tank and travels downwards and back along the bottom of the tank, ideal for large bottom dwellers as it takes freshly oxyenated water to stright to the bottom of the tank.
Power head in a corner will create a circular flow, if looking down at the top of the tank, this is also fine but needs more a powerful flow to create strong disturbance on the lower column. Mid to upper water colums this would suit.
Airstones just take water to the surface to aerate, and some nice bubbles.
As long as you don't over stock the tank either way should be fine with airstones.
I do prefer spray bars myself, if your airpump ever fails you still got oxy, a big plus, if the filter goes you still got it with the air pump, bit of redundancy is no harm.
