Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

good day to everyone,

i noticed last night that when i switched off the light in my tank the tetras started to scampered away in different directions, most of them ended up trapped between the filter and the glass  would it be okay to leave the lights on in the evening and turned off during daytime?

any advice would be of great help, thanks in advance:)

Hi Rafael
I find that it helps to have the room lights on when the tank lights go off,as a matter of interest how many hours are your lights on for each day..?

That would be an option, but...

It is almost as much as a shock for Fish to suddenly have no light as when the light is first switched on.
Thankfully they eventually come to terms with this (sort of) - but think about it, even on a night where there is no moon at all, it's never fully pitch black and once your eyes become used to this you can see (however little). But...the important thing to consider is the gradual change from light to dark - and vice-versa - gradual being the significant word.
To combat this in my Fish-room I have two strategically-placed LED nightlights (set to come on after dark automatically). These use a negligible amount of power but ensure the room is never totally dark.
You might want to consider this ploy too.
Another thing, if this has only started recently, check your nitrite and pH levels as if the former has risen, or the latter dropped this could be the cause of skittish behaviour in previously-settled Fish. Unlikely, but worth a check.
Let us know how this progresses.

John

My Marineland Led unit has 4 moonlights built in to it, when the main light in the Aquarium is switched off in a room where I have already turned off the center light, the Fish don't even flinch and you can watch them go to sleep so to speak, drifting downwards or hovering, then out come coolie loaches and corys to do their thing.
