Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

How to counter act?

Get a new girlfriend!?

Apart from that, no. Moving water will always make a noise. Maybe try slowing the rate of bubbles somehow?

You could try to get a different airstone or diffuser to create smaller bubbles which shouldnt make as much noise when they hit the top.

The Bos Femina species are well known for their giving out capabilities, it's just some are worse than others. Changing around the furniture a bit or changing the colour of the room may help. As Jay above has repeatedly reminded us, it's always best to do as much research as possible especially with such a dangerous and unpredictable species. On a more positive note, if that's all she's complaining about, count yourself as lucky!!

Could you clamp something onto the airline to slow down the air maybe or jus try different air stones i guess.

what about one of the air driven sponge filters. Keep the top of the outflow above the water and the air goes back to the air and the water flows back into the water. If kept low enough to surface it is pretty quiet. Use it in an edge as the airstone alone was leaving lots of micro bubbles under glass and also splashes from the bubbles popping

Agreed. Had rena ones, noise as hell, got Eheim defusers, very quiet, Only hear the tiny bubbles pop IF the room is silent.

To add, a noisy airpump can send a lot of noise down the airline making a whole lot of noise in the tank and outside it.

Can you not get a valve to restrict the airflow going to the airstone, this might reduce the noise of the bubbles or as suggested get a few different types of airstones and try them out

Ive my airstone on when Im out...its on a timer.Comes on in the morning and off at nighttime. Its easier that way,no-one has to listen to it then. Fish are happy.

Is it me:) or do the thicker airlines contribute to more noise?

Ive never had any issue with turning my airstone off at night. Tanks can do fine without airstones. Its the filter that needs to be running all the time.

maybe your pump is overpowered. i had problems with mine, replaced the diaphragms and now the pumps are silent its the air and bubbles making the noise (although i have no diffusers just open lines) but what i did primarily to slow the torrent of bubbles is along the airline you put a t valve, so you can vent some excess air although its best to run a vent line to a cbinet or something as this can hiss a bit. if you clamp your line you will put severe pressure on your pump and damage the diaphragms (which i think is what happened to mine originally) and the pump get really rattly

Ive a double airline into another tank also and find the noise is less when both are powered.
