Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

External Filter - Loudness

Its louder than I though it would be. I have an Eheim 2217. Is it possible to make it quieter? Was thinking of insulating it with styrofoam

Without sounding condescending, rattles and noises are usually down to two things, one, air trapped in the pump housing, two, Inlet and Outlet pipes vibrating against the cabinet etc.

If it is the first, try gently tipping the unit over to one side but make sure your pipes/tubes are properly secured to the head of the Filter, if the second, try placing Foam between the tubes and the surrounding Cabinet, if there is one of course.

I think I'm correct in saying that the 2217 is an external filter from the Eheim classic range.
Obviously if it's not a brand new unit and if there is no air being trapped in the pipework as mentioned above, my guess is that its your impeller bushes, shaft or prop blade unit itself. that are causing the problem (speaking from experience here)
At each end of the ceramic shaft there are two small rubber cups they fit onto the shaft and seat into the housing unit. These keep the whole thing centralised as it spins.. If these are worn then you will get the rattle and hum because the shaft is off centre and the blades are rubbing against the casing. Ultimately it will lead to a broken shaft.
Disassemble and check everything is seated properly and check for "wear n tear" of those rubber bushes

The part No. you are looking for in the diagram is 7438430

I have an old 2217 pump head unit (filter head) in the garage that I can take pictures of to show how to disassemble and give you an idea of what your looking for....if you like

Its a low hum so not sure if its trapped air. Probably just vibration

How would you know if it contained air?

If you jiggle the filter while it's on you'll hear the air being sucked into the powerhead then the air bubbles will be expelled from the return in the Tank but from what you have said it sounds like a vibration thing, Cabinets act like an Amplifier so any vibrations are magnified greatly.

Yeah I think its a vibration thing. Need to get it sorted so will probably just line it with insulation

get a big lump of foam and sit the filter on that (it'll stop vibrations from the feet) or like was said, put foam between the pipes and anythiing else they touch
