Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Is there such a thing as too much bogwood in a tank?

I was out collecting bogwood in the, well, bog, and I've it washed now, and just arranging it in the tank to get ideas.

And I like it. But I'm wondering will (or could) it be too much?

I'll chuck up some pics when my camera stops being ghey.

EDIT: Pic. Sorry its not great, camera was being wild funny, its from my Hero.

well i suppose the more you have the more tannins will leech into the water, but boil the bejesus out of it (which i'd say you did to kill any nasties) and steep it in water for a few days rinse it a few times and boil the bejesus out of it again you might be ok

edit, also it might lower your ph a wee bit

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

Iv never seen so much bog wood in a tank.... That would look great with some java moss, java fern and anubias through it, Its a bit woody!!

Maybe a little less on the left hand side of the tank.. i like the long peice in the middle but its a bit lost with the wood on top of it... just a suggestion.

What fish are you planning on putting in there? A pleco would love it!!!

..while there is no such thing as too much..I would be cautious of "dead spots".you can get build ups of detritus in these areas. If you are going to arrange as showm in the photo I would put some small power heads in behind the wood too keep the flow going.

Gav.

dont make me come over there.

I can't boil much of it, there's some MASSIVE pieces in there!

I have bit it with boiling water though, and spent all morning power hosing it (with a clean power hose, I did the house first, with no chemicals first, 2 1/2 hours with fresh water running though it) and Had it soaking in a bath outside for a week.

I'm going to return it to another bath, to try and leech more of the tannins out.

I like how it a very woody feel to it, like edge of a wooded stream, which is what I was hoping for.

I might take out some on the left hand side, I can move that into my smaller tank.

Not putting in a plec, I've a SE Asian Bumblebee Cat, and he doesn't play too well with others.

As I said in another post, I'm hoping to go for Asian fish, the Bumblebee Cat, some Killifish (hopefully Panchax) and had hoped for some loaches, some of the Botia genus, but most get too big, so I might have to knock that on the head.

I'm thinking I might need a lighter coloured sand/fine gravel to balance out the darkness of the wood. What do you think?

Lowering the pH might not be a bad thing, the water here is very limey and that raises it, doesn't it? I'm not sure if I'm using the test kit right, though, as it says its at an even 7. No matter what.

I have light coloured sand sorted out, thanks to Darren.

Will have it temporarily set up after Monday, not filling it yet. Maybe. In the middle of buying a house, and don't know how long til we move it. However I'm wild tempted.

Thinking about trying to source some industrial style hanging lights. Not sure how that would work for growing plants though.
