Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Kuhli Loach ? was created by barr (declan)
Hi Everyone

I was thinking of getting a couple of these. Anyone have them.

Would they mix ok with guppies and tetras.

They look really small and I was thinking they would get stuck in by filter (Fluval 2).

Is this a possibility ?

mate they are great fish, you'd want about 5 or more and they are very peaceful, some might tend to be noctural as i had mine ages without seeing them but you have to have some hiding spaces, they love a sand substrate which they like to dig in for food, if your worried about them swimming in the filter cover it wit a bit of nylon or a bit of netting but these are strong swimmers and should be strong enough as to not get sucked in, i highly recommend these fish are they striped or black/brown

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

I have 8 of these guys... They get along with any fish thats not big enough to eat them.

Kuhli loaches will always find a way into your filter... they get out the same way they got in so not to worry...

You should get a group of them.. in small numbers you probably wont see them all that much.

Ps. They love bloodworms!!

kuhli loaches are ideal for a community aquarium. you may not see much of them but they do no harm. if you wish to catct them take a day off work, you might need it.

Kulhi's will get into an external. not so sure however that they will go back into the tank from the external however. When changing the filter, or cleaning it, always check carefully as they can be kulhi's in the external. Mine have gotten in their on occassion. They seem to be hardy and have survived inside there whenever Ive found them in their. Give them plenty of places to hide, they are mainly nocturnal, and I find a nice bit of driftwood with some Java fern attached works perfectly for them. Get at least 5 but preferrably 8! They dont be long growning either so one month you see them small, next month they are alot bigger! Buggers to catch also! They prefer sand also.

Iv had my kuhli loaches for around 1-2 years now... At first i never saw them but once they settle in they come out all the time once there is a big group of them... One of my kuhli loaches swims at the surface at feeding time, I managed to hand feed him once.

I had kuhli's in a tank with an external once... i thought 2 of them died. One day i decided to clean the external and a found the two of them in there... they were in there for around 1-2 months, perfectly healthy.

Thanks for the replies :)

With regards feeding them are they ok with flakes? I'm just a little concerned they may not get enough food as most of my fish gobble everything up top and there wouldn't be much left at the bottom (especially if they only come out at nite )

Alex, when you say they come after they settle, is this at feeding time? Is this something they can learn.

as wit most community fish a varied diet of flakes and live/frozen foods even algae wafers is always best, mine love bloodworms, as far as feeding them and worrying about them not getting enough you could thow some in at lights out although wen hungry they will come out in the day mine are now out all the time, food will get caught in your substrate and they will find some.

I've never kept these before but as far a I know they are a scavenger fish and will eat just about anything.

If you want to get some of your flakes to sink to the bottom, a good idea is to pre-soak them in a cup of of aquarium water for a minute or 2 first before emptying your cup into the aquarium.

NLS sinking pellets work a treat at night time for the Kulhi's. They are small enough for all your fish to get some. I drop mine right over the Java fern and the Kulhis slide their way around the place to find them.
