Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi, this may seem like a silly question but I was supposed to be getting my fish today but the shop told be the wrong day for getting them in. I'm going away for the weekend and was wondering would it be ok to turn off the filter and heater even though the tank is fully cycled. I cycled it with Seachem Stability. Really sorry if this is a daft question!

why knock it off? just leave it running you'l only be slowing down the nitrogen cycle

edit: although ive cycled my tank witout a heater

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

yes that is true, never turn off your filter ,only for cleaning purposes.it takes a while after that before your filter works as before the cleaning.the best thing is to squeeze the filter mats out in tank water until most of the dirt is out of the pores of the material.most people clean it too drasticly

on this i would say not to buy fish on the same day they arrive in a shop..let them acclimate them after shipment for a couple of days. You may jsut be wasting your money otherwise.

dont make me come over there.

Thanks for the replies. I'll leave the filter on but think I'll turn off the heater. Have a thermometer in my daughters room and thats at 24 degrees nearly every night.

Gavin, I only went there on the day of the supposed shipment on staffs advice as they sell very quickly. Not going to go there again though. That's twice they've told me the wrong day for getting them in. Can't say I trust them very much if they don't even know what week it is!

just to mention, your heater knocks it's self on and off, although it's not 100% needed pre-fish it does help the bacteria and it will only use a very small amount of juice

One extremely important thing you MUST know is that a thriving colony of Bacteria can only survive if they are bathed in Oxygen rich Water, if you stop your filter you do two things, you allow the tank to surrender Oxygen and starve the Filter by stopping the flow through it. While cold Water has the ability to have more Oxygen in it than warm Water, I'd just leave things alone including the Heater.

Dead Bacteria break down like anything else and in doing so will leave toxic byproducts and an anaerobic ( without oxygen )situation can lead to more problems.

if you want to turn the filter off cause your going away for the weekend would you want to turn it off if there was fish in it and you had to go away for a few days

if that is the case and you to afraid to leave things plugged in while you go away seriously think about keeping fish cause you need at least 4 things plugged in 24/7 lights, filter, heater, airstone they are all necessary. and without them your just killing fish

im not trying to be judgemental or anything im just trying to help you out and hope you dont kill as many fish as i did by being impatient and clumsey.

Thank you stretnik, that's exactly what I needed to know. Didn't know whether it would have that kind of affect or not. Definitely staying on then.

If the fish were there there'd be someone coming in to feed the fish so wouldn't be worrying about leaving things plugged in. I'm one of those people who unplugs nearly everything when going to bed and gives out people for leaving the TV on stand-by. lol. It's staying on anyway. Seems to more hassle to turn it off and more wasteful in the long run!

Cheers everyone for the help!
