Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Is this unusual?

Hi, just after getting a Betta Splenden and I'm not too sure if the colouring on his head is normal or a sign of illness. Can't seem to find anything online about it. Here's a photo of him. Any help would be great!

It's not a great photo but best I could get with the lighting in the room

Ok, can't seem to get a photo of him up. Basically there's a dusty green colour spotted on his head on both sides. (He's red) It could just be the light that makes it look so dusty as well. He seems healthy and happy enough so could be worrying about nothing!

Aims,
I sent you a PM telling you to send the picture to

and I'll get it added on for everyone to see and evaluate.
Perhaps you haven't seen the little envelope icon in the top left-hand corner above the 'menu'?
That sort of flashes when you have a PM.

Here are Aims' pictures of her Betta:

Fine-looking Fish, but really the images are a little low in clarity...but for myself I don't think there's anything too much amiss with him.

Aims, keep a bit of an eye on him and let us know if the symptom you describe starts to worsen - I think he's OK though. Any other observations?

The pics aren't great I know. Waiting on a light to be delivered for the tank. Should be able to get a better one then. Looking at it during the daylight now it seems to have a bit of a shine to it so I'd say it's just his coloration. He seems fine otherwise. Didn't feed him yesterday with it being the first day but fed him brine shrimp this morning and he ate it no bother. Only thing is he seems to be spending a lot of time around the heater even though the thermometer is reading 28C. Should I turn it up a bit?

Cheers Gerry :) He was definitely the nicest in the shop (left alive anyway) they were after putting him and another fella together and the other one was well and truly dead when I got to the shop!

This sometimes happens with Bettas, although it's hard to know why - but 28 is fine, even a tiny bit high, so I wouldn't increase the temperature.

Perhaps your shop might be better avoided in future if that's how they treat their Fish...

If you have a small 'handbag-sized' mirror you could occasionally set it against the glass in order for him to 'challenge' the 'rival' (himself) this would give him a small amount of interaction within the tank in view of that he has no company yet. Mind you, company for male Bettas can be a little bit of a problem because the long flowing fins seem to attract all sorts of 'unwanted' attention from other Fish which often leads to fin-nipping and fin-loss - which would be a real pity for such a nicely formed male as yours.

Only decided to go for that shop in the end because the other fish seemed fine and healthy as did their rabbits, birds and other animals and it's only down the road from me. It was a very planted tank that they were in but still, there were at least 2 other tanks they could have put them in. He couldn't even remember where he'd put another one, could have been eaten by something else for all we know! Would have even been better off in those little cups! I'd say next time I'll have to find someone to drive me somewhere else. Prefer to go out of my way a bit than give them much more business.

Hard to say of the pictures but to me seems perfectly fine, you will find the green metalic spots on many fighters.

Cheers Xeon and Alex. There's no light on the tank yet so it looked like a real flat dusty green in the evening, and that's what got me worried, but could see shine on it in daylight so have stopped my fretting!
