Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

yes of course, you don't need a heater to cycle a filter although it can speed it up slightly

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

The new tank I am getting has cold water fish in it so I was hoping to retain alot of the water and keep the filter media as I could start putting in my own tropical fish in so I dont have to start from scratch again.

What are you going doing with the coldwater fish?

As Dar says, you can keep the old media......and as Dar also says: keep checking the quality of the water.

But an added word of caution: the species of bacteria that have colonised the filter and that change nitrates to nitrites (the nitrifying bacteria) tend to be rather sensitive to changes in temperature (and other things as well).
They are also quite slow forming a good colony (hence they are often the rate limiting step in a complee tank cycling).

They tend to be more sensitive to change than do the bacteria free in the water that change ammonia to nitrates (the nitrosofying bacteria) in general.

So, yes the same filters can be used....but check that the change in temperature is not such as to upset the filter media bacteria.

Maybe at this time of year, however, the difference in temp between an indoor coldwater tank and a tropical tank is probably not much anyway.

And....bump up to Fishowners post above this.....

Would any suppressed Disease in the cold tank be activated due to the warmer environment?

Just wondering.

That is always a good question.
Certainly, that would be very apt when considering anything that forms spores.

There is, however, the case that some diseases are not tolerant of the warmer waters anyay.

I have moved a coldwater set-up to full tropical without any problems, but I've also found that filter media after having to deal with lots and lots of goldfish mess (and do they produce a mess) is often so clogged that it might as well be binned.

If I were faced with an emergency choice of, say, having to get some emergency water for, say, Discus, then I'd probably use some water from the goldfish tank (and warming it up of course) in preference to using water from, say, the lungfish tank (tropical and almost the same as discus water), for a variety of reasons.
BUT, aquasafe and water-aging agents are pretty good...I'd realistically simply start afresh and take care with feeding and increase the cleaning and water changes in the early parts of effectively a new-tank.
