Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,
Could anyone recommend some books for me? Am very new to fish-keeping. So far I only have a 10G tank with one male veil-tail Betta Splenden. I hope to add maybe 2 or 3 more fish with this in the near future. I also plan to get a much bigger tank at some point (once finances allow for it!)
The kind of books I'm looking for are ones about Bettas, tank maintenance, planting an aquarium, community aquariums and any other ones you think I shouldn't go without! Also my local shops don't have a great selection of books so any recommendations of places to buy (preferably online) books at bargain prices will be great!

Thanks dar, not quite what I'm looking for though. As much as I'd love to have a go at breeding bettas, I'm no where near doing that yet! Will definitely save the link for future reference though

if you read through JohnH recommends one "Bettas - A Complete Pet Owner's Manual" which only has a section dedicated to genetics
Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

Hi Aims
My own personal choice on a book would be The Aquarium Owners handbook by David Alderton cost about 20 euro if i remember right
covers a wide range of topics for the beginer from breeding live bearers, egg layers
different spieces and what there requiremnts are and also differant diseases and treatments
again thats my own preferance

I read a couple of bad reviews on this but then again, reviews you find on the internet are so varied that it's very hard to know what to get! Hence why I'm asking here. Ye havn't let me down yet in the short time I've been here!

Here's a good review of it.
Like you say there are opinions and then there are opinions - for what it is (a smallish guide) it is great, I think.
But, it is only totally about Bettas.

A general all rounder is the Interpet Questions and Answers manual of Tropical Freshwater Aquarium.
Gina Sandford.
Great book and it doesnt go too in detail either which makes it very readable for a beginner.
If its specifically for bettas then another book may be better but the book Im recommending is defo one you'd read and learn from.

i'm in this hobby 5 years (only) and ive read a total of 0 books (of importance), i study online and got fantastic help off lads like these, i'm not rubbishing study as this answers questions you won't have to ask or think of asking, but i've read rubbish books recommended to me and i made my own mind up, so don't listen to people saying a book is not up to scratch, study it, ask questions, get told your wrong and take it all in, as there is people in the business 50+ years and still learning
Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

Hi Aims
A good all round book for a beginner is Aquarium Fish by Mary Bailey and Gina Sandford.
Another also called Aquarium Fish by Don Harper
Both are light reading with a very wide scope for such small books.
