Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hair Algae on Java Moss

Hi, I have hair algae growing on my java moss in my cycling tank. (At least I'm fairly sure it's hair algae after pulling affected part out and extensive googling!) Should I worry about this or will it disappear after tank has finished cycling?

29L tank
11W lamp
Carbon Cartridge hang-on filter

29C
Ammonia: 1.5 (Am cycling with stability so it's not rising past this despite the water being very cloudy at the moment)
Nitrite: .3
Nitrate 5>10
KH: 40
GH: 30 (Test kit for KH and GH not very reliable)
pH: 6.5-7

Am wondering should I do a water change or will this mess up my cycle?

Any direct light hitting the tank? Lighting duration? I have only got hair algae with direct sunlight or leaving my T5s on over night.
I don't think the Nitrates of that score should alone be responsible, but others would be more learned regarding Nitrates and Algae and will advise I am sure

No direct sunlight. It's in an alcove so well shaded from the window. Have the light on for 8 hours a day. Could ammonia or the cloudy water be a cause? I knocked a piece of drift wood when removing the algae and kicked up a load of debris from the substrate. The substrate was definitely well cleaned before going into the tank so assuming its from the fish food I used to get the cycle going. (Didn't think I used that much though!)

Had a look at your link from other post, few good tips but I already have a good flow, lower and midlevel seperate filtration, lots of aeration, and cleaning every 4 days or so. Thought about a UV but dont want to sterilize my tank completely.

Maybe get a some fish that will make a meal of the algae? Not an option for me unfortunately as it's only 29L and set on getting a Betta for it. Hopefully it will clear up when the cycle is finished and can start cleaning the water. Have turned up my filter to increase aeration but will have to turn it down again when the Betta goes in.
Hopefully someone with a bit of experience of getting rid of it will have answers for us soon! :)
