Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have a 4ft tank with 3 braces one left one right and one centre

Is it safe to fill the water above the braces?
Please let me know.

Cheers Lads,

i doubt that would be an issue, although it limits surface aggitation (well mine does)

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

Not sure if its safe or not.
But if you have any air breathing fish they won't be able to go up and get air where the braces are if you fill
it that high.

cheers dar
My out take for the external is just below the braces so I used to fill just up to the braces but with the water evaporation the out take doesnt stay under water very long and i have to top it up every couple of days if I was to fill above the braces the out take would still be close enought to the surface to keep it flowing.

cheers for the info.

I have hoplo's they are air breathers but the braces are not that wide so I doubt it would be a problem

my tank is 5foot and the diference between under the braces and over is only a couple of buckets, this would hardly cause need to worry

now rather than take up space on the board, may i hijack this thread but on the same subject of braces, my tank is acryllic and the braces are expandable, which i believe would not really offer much support and i think might only be there to hold up the glass panel lids, anyone any thoughts on this and if i could remove them? in saying that the lids retain heat and save on juice

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

If it's still under warranty NO!! If not, what will you gain, why do it and worry? if it explodes and has nothing to do with the extra water you'll never know if it was because you added the extra Water and you'll be kicking yourself.

I agree with Kev, I have a glass braced tank, I would not fill it about the braces.
If your tank is not enough for your fish it is as simple a bigger tank or smaller fish, as disaster is far worse than inconvenience.

The tank is designed to be filled to a certain point. Going outside of specified useage quite often a risk.

Saying that, I can see fish slamming into the braces possible causing seriuos injury to the fish.

Saying that, 3 braces in a 4 foot tank is lots so pressure wise you may be ok, it will look naff though and expect water spillage!!

Just lenghten the intake pipe! Job done.

You can even bosh it by using some garden hose or other tubing that will fit the strainer and filter hosing... that way it won't even cost you anything.
