Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,

I injured a fish and now I'm not sure if I should finish the job. He got caught in a pipette I was using to extract a water sample, I guess he swam in to close to investigate. Unfortunatly I was distracted by the girlfriend yappin on about some crap. I'm raging and feel really bad for the fish.

His eye is damaged, while it does not seem looose, it is raised out of the socket and now he is struggling to swim.

I've placed him in a breeding trap in the tank so the current wont bother him.

Should I kill him and if so how? (Head off with knife?)

Damn, feck, blast, crap, SORRY FISHY!!!

Thanks.

Chill bro, these things happen. If you are sure this fish is on the way out then there are a few methods you can use to do the deed. These include freezing, decapitation, carbon dioxide, anesthetics breaking the neck and injections. Ive done the freezing one a few times but I figured the fisg has to feel discomfort going like that so if I must I will decapatate or snap the neck, depending on the fish. There are those who will advocate letting nature run its course but it is you as the owner who will decide on the quality of life this fish is going to face. Best of luck,

Dan, if this is bugging you, be prepared, it doesn't get any easier, I usually whack the patient off of a hard surface, I wouldn't suggest that for anything bigger than fish that size, you'll have a hard time avoiding your finger while trying to find its neck, a tried and tested method is clove oil, you put it in a glass and pop in your buddy and it anesthetises the guy and he dies.

Kev.

PS. I have squashed fish with Rock, left one in a net while thinking it had gone into the tank, found fish on the floor after it decided to go walkabout and found a Cory in the corner of a bag three or four hours later, luckily, it was still alive.

I'd give it the chance to recover first. It will swim funny as they do when they get a nasty shock as the lethargic swimming isn't always from damage to the parts needed to swim.
It may surprise you if left to recover, if you have others it will benefit from the company if you put one or 2 in the net with it, less stress:)

If it looks bad then as suggested, a very quick death.

Jay bet me to it man, was gonna say the same, maybe keep an eye on him for a while to see if he gets worse, but being such a small fish the chances might be slim, its down to u, s**t happens man, lesson learned. I would go with the instant decap meself. He might be okay, have had this experience meself when i thought a fish was on the way out but left him until the mornin to find him swimmin around the tank not a bother and made a great recovery. Heres hopin........:) :)

Thanks very much lads. I really appreciate the advice. I'm so annoyed at myself but maybe he'll survive. I'll leave him overnight and see in the morning.

Thanks again for all the advice.

although ive done the clove oil trick (saddest day of my life watching his life ebb away), it seemed to stress the fish slightly (which made me even more upset), i think i might of added to much, Kev is there a ratio on this that you know of to minimize stress?

There you go Dar, it's the adding of alcohol after he has been anesthetised that kills the Fish.

Kev.

PS. Dan,

Don't try saving him, an injury like this is open to secondary infections that would be a worse thing to deal with.

I just checked back on the guy and he is dead now anyway. At least he didn't suffer too long. Thanks for all the advice. I'm amazed at the amount of fast responses. What a great forum!

Thanks Kev, but I've just gotten my tank over a whitespot outbreak so to avoid further outbreaks the tank is now quarantined permanently.

I have:

6 Threadfin rainbowfish (Iriatherina werneri)
8 Galaxy Rapora (aka Celestial Pearl Danio) remaining!
8 popondetta furcata
3 ottos
5 shrimp

+ lots and lots of plants.

so, I think I'm well stocked for now. These are all great tankmates by the way.

Sorry Dan, if you want to keep livestock you are eventually going to have deadstock at some point.

Must be something in the air tonight as I too had to give one of my galaxies a one way ticket on the porcelain express earlier on!

Are you sure?

I thought Spencer said it in 'The Old Man and the Sea'...or was it Uncle Remus in 'Song of the South'?

No, not at all - it was a quote from that fine film 'Finding Nemo'.
