Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

First disease in tank

The other day I noticed small white dots on the fins and bodies of a few of my discus, so assumed it was the dreaded Ich. They aren't so much like salt grains as tiny dots of tip-ex which slightly threw me, as I heard Ich was opaque, like salt, rather than pure white like sugar. Anywho, I started a heat treatment by upping the temp to 30'C (over past 48 hrs) and added Protozin in the appropriate dosage. Before adding the second dose, I did small water change and hoovered any of the more calm corners of the tank to ensure none of the parasite will remain in calm water (was this a mistake?). I will continue the dosage for the full six days.

However, my initial fear that it is not White Spot returned today, as I noticed some of the infected fish have slightly clouded eyes. Could this mean I mis-diagnosed, or could it be a secondary infection hitting the already compromised immune system of the fish? I'm so meticulous about water changes that I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with water quality.

Help needed urgently,

Thanks in advance,

Lorcan.

Hi Lorcan

Cloudy eyes can be a simptom of Ich. Newcomers in recent weeks may have brought it?

48 hours is not long enough to expect recovery, if you are using meds keep it at 28 degrees for a longer period, increase aeration, do some water changes and vac gravel daily for a few days, it takes a few days for the heat to make most of the parasites drop off with the sped up life cycle, the cloudy eyes should be the first improvement you see.

They can get cloudy eyes from a sudden change in conditions aswell, test your tap water just in case.

I had ich in my tank about a month ago all cleared up now . Mark is giving sound advise there 28 degrees and follow the full medication guidelines.

It will clear up in no time. If it doesn't you have used the process of elimination
keep going you will get there .

I actuacally treat for itch every time I put and new edition into my tank not fish or plant .

I think you misunderstood slightly- I increased the temp over 48 hrs with the intention of keeping it there until medication is finished. Seems like it's sarting to clear already.

Thanks for the help,
Lorcan
