Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My mother reckons the esb bill has gone up by about 75 euro a month since i set up my 400litre Freshwater tank. Does this sound realistic, Im running a 400watt heater and 55watt pump 24 hrs a day and airstone and single t8 light for about 9 hours a day

55watt pump, filter? thats a lot of juice man seeing as an fx5 is 42 or 48w.

Also, a heater at each end of the tank may save cash too, with a sudden cooling like we're had if the room gets cold even a 400w will struggle to keep the temp at 26 degrees or above, I have 2 300w heaters in the 450 and they were on a bit over this cold snap at night.

You would need to reduce your overall watt usage with efficient gear over time, I learned this lesson myself and now run all my tanks on less than a quater of what it used to cost me..

If you have several tanks in a room, it is often cheaper to keep the room warm over night instead of 8 300w heaters buring all night

sound excessive, as i'm running 27 tanks in total with a total of a couple of thousand litres so a couple of thousand watts in heaters and and 2 large airpumps for internal filteration as well as a few internals and my electricity has gone up only by 75euro every 2 months so i reckon the increase aint just 1 400l and its equipment

Fishkeeping the Only way to get wet and wild

currently 25 tanks, and breeding is the aim of everything i keep

Mark its a 55watt hydor seltz return pump coming from a sump. To be honest the flow from it is brutal. Ive since ordered an eheim which is 5 watts less but i think it will probably do better than the hydor, im also in an attic and the room is always warm, as the heat from the rest of the house gets caught up here, havent seen a drop in tank temperature at all. I think with the tumble dryer been on a lot is half the reason aswell for the bill benn so high

I dont think the extra on the the ESB is from the tank, or at least not all of it.

I also have my tanks (16) in the attic and my last bill was €212 including everything else in the house.

Heat rises through the house keeping the attic warm. That is once the roof is well insulated.

Your maxim cost for the appliances( airpump estimated at 6w) considering the heater it's on 24/7 (I doubt it) except the t5 ( no wattage given) it's ~ €40 - 45 per month. Even if you have one 80w t5 at 9h/day it's under €3/ month, so it's mathematically impossible to use €75.

As your heater it's your main consumer try at random hours to see about how long it's on and you can get a rough idea what you are actualy using. That it's under € 50/month for sure. if the heater it's on only half of the time you use under €30/month

A tumble dryer uses around 2400w/hour, around 50c/h

Did a quick rough estimate of cost and I'd say something using a single watt run 24hr a day 365 days year cost annually a euro.
So a 10w Powerhead costs €10 a year.
From your list I dont see your using 2400 watts per hour, which would be a €200 a month bill.

You can buy a little yoke like the one suggested by nozebleed (above) in Tesco's or any such place (B&Q, Woodies etc) which plugs into your electricity socket and then you put the loft plug into that - this then records the amount of units of electricity which passes through it.
This would be ideal for your situation as you could then tell your Mother exactly how much you have used and pay her accordingly.

For myself (in an entirely different scenario) I just pay the bill every second month with a slight shudder, just wishing it wasn't quite so high!!!

Ehm... methinks your Mom might just not like the Aquarium in the house because 75 is a huge amount.
