Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

RIP JAY-Z

Hi all. My blue crayfish Jay-z passed away during the night, and I have no idea why.
He has been perfect till a day or 2 ago when he went very quiet but was still eating.
I have tested the water and it couldnt be better, my water is set at 26, could this be
too high for him? He was fairly big about 4"-5" long. Also I introduced 2 new fish yesterday
but this didn't seem to affect anyone else. He was my only arachnid.

Just told the gf here i think Jay-z is dead then i read on lol.

Not sure what temp the should be at but i have read before that they can be kept at a room temp.
Someone else might shine some light on this.

How long is your tank up and running, how long did you have him?

arachnids are spiders and scorpions. crayfish are crustacaens.
sorry for your loss, its brutal when you lose a fav. pet.

The tank is running about 6 weeks with fish and I had him about 4 weeks. He yas happy as larry running around and digging holes in the gravel. He did a partial molt of his tail and went very quiet but was still eating, then thismorning found him dead. No sign of any injury or wounds.

Sorry to hear about that. It's always a bugger when you get no chance to diagnose and attemp to combat an illness.
I was recently reading in PFK mag about how most aquarium plant fertilizers are highly toxic to Crayfish and other inverts because of the traces of copper found in them. Were the new fish you added quarantined?
If not. Did they come from a pet shop tank that was Planted?
I think some fish foods even contain trace ammounts of copper sulphate!

The amount of copper found in foods would be minimal, highly unlikely to kill. Crayfish would be considerable larger than most shrimp etc,but copper nonetheless would be toxic and as Adam said the substrate may have been an issue although from the sounds of it you had just gravel which would of been fine for him.Perhaps some decorations which could of contained copper in the tank?.Did you add any plants lately? Often they are dipped in chemicals which crustacaens do not take kindly too. Although I must say its unlikely, given he was 4 weeks in the tank. They dont take too kindly either to newly set up tanks, they prefer well established tanks. The fact he did a partial molt suggests he may have been vunerable immediately after if he didnt have sufficient places to hide, what other fish have you with him & what temp is the tank?
Shame to lose him, they have stunning colours and add a different dimension to a tank.

You might want to consider the ph in your tank, often a simple solution to all aquatic problems. Being a crustacaen Crayfish need some calcium in the water to help them regenerate their shell after a molt (ie some hardness in the water). If you have bogwood in the tank or particularily soft water in the area and havent being doing regular waterchanges, a ph crash may have occured and would certainly have knocked your crayfish back after a molt. They tend to be quite hardy so it may just have been bad luck.

I would say it's more than likelty because of his molt. Many die shortly after molting,it must weaken them somewhat, and make them very susceptible to anything, even the smallest amounts of something wrong in the water can have devestating effects.

Edit:just read some other answers, and they've mentioned this already.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!
