Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Here's a piece of text from another site.

Any advice on sexing a group of Dolphnis I have? I want to reduce the size of the group, so they are more likely to start breeding (tank too crowded to keep them all anyway)/

They range in size from 3-5", but are from two different purchases, so I can't go by size.

I've also read that you can't always go by the size of the hump, since both sexes CAN have large or small humps.

I've tried venting, but I either can't see well enough (even with magnafying glass), or I'm just too stupid!

I've read that females tend to be followers and not aggressive. So I started moving the dominant fish from the tank and seeing who becomes the next most dominant, remove him, and so on.

Each time, the dominant fish became considerably darker and more aggressive to the others, so I'm ASSUMING that they are probably males.

Out of 11 fish, I have 4 left in the tank (just removed a belligerent, apparently male, that had been tame and quiet, till I removed the latest most dominant fish a few days ago).

Ironically, three of the four left, are the smallest of the bunch.

But for all I know, I could be completely wrong on this approach.

Kev.

The top fish looks like a male to me but I wouldn't be a 100% sure as I would have to see a couple of different pictures to be sure.

@ stretnick

That method may not be the most precice as it is not unusual for female Malawi's to be the dominant fish in the tank, especially if suddenly she is the largest fish in the group.

As I typed, it's copied and pasted from another site, personally I don't have a clue nor the interest I just Googled it to see if it might help the Guy out.

That's why I included "But for all I know, I could be completely wrong on this approach."

I would say Male. Male dolphins generally have longer trailing dorsal and anal fins than females.
Its a fine looking fish too ;)

i would be pretty sure that the fish in pic. is male. i have never seen a female with a broad head such as that.

30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish
