Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys,

Newish to the forum, couple of months. Been keeping fish for 6 months or so. I am obsessed with african cichlids. At the minute I keep a small community of tanganyikan cichlids (which I have posted pics of in the Cichlids section on the forum). I had planned to upgrade to a 4ft later this month but unfortunately this wont be happening any time soon as something has come up. I had planned to then set up a malawi tank!! Malawis are what I had orginally wanted to keep but due to lack of knowledge and possibly a slight bit of impatience  I opted for a smaller / less than adequate long term aquarium. I do hope to double this to approx a 260L setup anyway during the summer (Ive been hinting at the missus for my birthday in August :P).

Anyway to my question, what I wanna ask and am aware of requirements of african cichlids to a point. I am enjoying keeping tangs at present and there are fish I just adore, unfortunately these are bigger species such as Frontosa and Tropheus. Some Malawis though are on a par and perhaps not as big. Could I possibly keep malawis such as demasoni or salousi say? I have read that they dont grow quite as big as other mbuna, between 2.5" to 4". I know it wouldnt be ideal but if i got them small/juvenile and converted to a 260L by end summer would this be suitable?

I have good filtration, JBL CristalProfi e900 and an internal Interpet PF3 and do regular water changes.

What you guys think? Am I just being too overambitious? We all have our weaknesses when it comes to the fish we want to keep!! ;)

All opinions welcome

Wayne

Because of their aggressive nature, mbuna need to be overstocked in order to spread the aggression. They also need space so a 'victim' of aggression can get lost in the crowd. Its accepted that a 3footer is the absolute minimum for mbuna.

Also when given lots of rockwork which mbuna need your 125 litre capacity could be nearer 50/60 litres. Maybe ok for juvies but only in the very short term.

Thanks Christy,

Yeah heard bout the heavy overstocking. Would 260L still be too small?

Thanks again,
Wayne

You'll be ok but I'd stick to the "less aggressive" species. I'd stay away from any of the Melanochromis species, these are lovely but really mean.

Here's an interesting article whch should help;
