Planted Tank Setup advice needed
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All,
I'm looking to set up a 60L planted tank within the next month or two.
After hours spent on the AGA website and youtubing Mr Amanos designs, I have decided to attempt an Iwagumi style tank.
All I have is a bare 60L tank with basic equipment.
Could you guys have a look at the below and let me know what you think of the equipment choice which I'm looking to buy soon:
- Hagen Glo T5 Light Beams (2 x 24W, 61cm)
- ADA Power Sand & ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia (still looking for a retailer)
- External vs. Internal filter?? Will most likely buy an external filter - any suggestions?
- Heater - came with tank
- CO2 - AquaGro CO2 Starter Kit
- Ferts ???
Hardscape - Rocks (Quartzite I think - Already tested with Vinegar)
I'll be stocking this aquarium with Harlequin Rasbora,Otocinculus & Red Cherry Shrimp.
I haven't fully decided on the plans yet but I'm def looking for a carpeting plant i.e. Dwarf Hairgrass otherwise I'm still open minded.
Any tips and hints will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
David

sounds good..
was just reading your stocking list and thinking to myself "galaxy rasboras" instead of harlequins,
i keep harlequins and there are lovely fish, i also had galaxys and they are stunning little fish in that size of a set up..
not tryin to change your mind, thought i just throw that in there, they are def worth a look.
good luck with whatever you decide...

have a look on tropica.com they have sections of plants listed as easy, medium and hard, so think about the final design you want to achieve and work from that, picking out plants from tropica and see if your lfs can get in the same species for you (alot actually get the tropica ones in too)
i'd say you will definately be fine with the medium plants (i can barely keep the easy ones alive) as your lighting might not be strong enough for the harder ones, but the details and growing care are all given on their e-catalogue

dcb,
ADA substrates you can buy in green machine in UK or you can join my order I am going to place in May. I think I have more than 10 kg of spare capacity in a parcel at the moment (flat rate for dispatches up to 30 kg). One 9-liter bag of Amazonia is 5.7 kg close to 6 kg and covers tank bottom of 60 x 30 cms. Regarding Power Sand (more expensive than Amazonia soil) one bag of 2 liters would be sufficient for you. If you are interested in just PM and we will work on it.
Regarding fertilization - it depands on your pocket. You can go for EasyLife. It seems to be most popular and worth money for quality) or any other one. I'm going to check using salts in the nearest time.

I don't know where Zig is these days but by all accounts, he is the Guru where Plants and Planted Tanks are concerned, try a PM to him.
