Sump Freshwater?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Do you need a sump for a freshwater setup What i have read you can add a sump to any tank with an over flow box and buy the sump section. there are 3 types of sumps but what are the major differences does anyone have a sump for fresh water.
i suppose it would add more water to the setup meaning you can have more fish or would the same stocking rules apply.
Does anyone know where you can buy a sump or does it need to come with the tank.

sump = more water, more filter media & media combinations, better filtration (so can stock a bit more), easy access, easy water changes (let the return pump do the work), more surface area (more oxygenation), no clumsy filters in the tank (and no heaters too) basically they are the dog's dangly bits for filtration. i have never used an overflow box but know about them, and as for sump design there are many out there like wet/dry pnes but i have the basic chamber sump and it makes the best use of the sump tank. in fact i believe it is the same as cichlidguy's tank (betta 1300??)

they are good enough tanks, but you might need to replace the stand (as i did) since they are on the flimsy "flat pack furniture" side
as said, have a scroll through the for sale section they are not an uncommon tank and can go for a very reasonable price

i have got six words for you, D.I.Y it's your only man. i busted, well i did nothing to bust it i just took the propeller cover off my filter and the clip broke so i think i will have to look into that myself today
more slight hijacking but it might be beneficial to you in the future. joey are you running a sump and Co2? i'm pretty sure Darren (platy) was mentioning that you will lose Co2 running the two together
Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

no dar i'm not running co2 but had considered it before and if i was going to do it i'd put an atomiser in line on the ruturn hose to the spray bar it wont lose too much (although i know the weir and sump itself adds surface area for co2 loss but by which time the fine bubbles would have passes over all the tanks)
but anyway i'm not so i dont worry about it - i let the fish and plants work together and try to do as little as possible fert/easycarbo wise
