Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi all ,im a bit confused at the minute, need some help /guidance!my 4 yr old daughter had been telling me for days that my guppys had little fry i looked and couldnt see any,now she said there was only 2.thats a bit strange unless the mother eat all her other fry but the pregnant one i have is still fat and her gravid spot is black but she isnt squared off and she is full life, ive been watching her for a few days and nuthing has dropped, could it be possible that she would be in slow labour and only produce a few at a time??by what ive read in books and seen online they give birth to many not just 2.theres probably no answer to this question is there?be great to hear from someone who has had this problem in the past before.

regards traynor

she could have ate them, mine did. they are tiny they could be skied in the substrate or plants. i believe these can store sperm for later dates

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

As Dar said, there is no maternal care by Guppies (or most livebearers so far as I know). She will pop one out, turn around and eat it straight away. Guppy fry really don't last long without alot of hiding places. Mops will do if you don't have enough plants.

You can see how minute they are, so when they are born they will immediately find a corner to hide in, to avoid being back inside Mammy again! Very easy to miss. Often the first I know of Guppy fry being in my quarantine tank is when the adults splash around at the surface chasing them!

Put in some Java moss and plants and it gives them a place to hide to avoid being eaten. They will head for the substrate also to hide. As the others have said, they get eaten by the other fish also.
Enjoy it for the moment, dont worry too much if you lose the fry, with livebearers like guppys they will continue to breed alot. Hence the name the millions fish!

Buy yourself a good breeding trap if you want to raise the young, these traps were the mainstay of keeping livebearers, the young aren't eaten as they slip through a V shaped groove into a chamber beneath where they can be kept after the female stops dropping young and is then removed.
