Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Correct Alan,Damian is a nice chap, but he wasn't well enough for pints that night.Dr Burgess and his wife were though, and enjoyed the Guiness.
Although he could hardly get a word in,he was hearing all about wild discus and angels ;) ;)

Ummm....wonder who was talking about wild discus and angels? ;)

Not sure if I can make the night as we have a few family issues going on at the moment.
But, hope all have a good night.

Is this guy the replacement for David Ford? or is David Ford still around at Aquarian? or am I so out of date with things nowadays?

on a serious note, this is a great initiative by petstop and damian and should be supported by everybody who can make the time to attend. there is always something to learn from experienced speakers such as dr. burgess.
and i think acara is going to buy us all a pint.

a big thank you to petstop, damian and dr peter burgess.
i went along to this with gerry evans and it was very enjoyable. damian was a great host and dr burgess was a great speaker and his talk included information about various products and aspects of parasitism and medications. tea and coffee etc was available and i ate half a box of biscuits because i missed my dinner for the cause lol. the attendance was typically disappointing and it would not encourage such worthy inituitives for the future. but at least the quality of the audience compensated for this to an extent. the people who attended imo are among the best and most dedicated fishkeepers around and are the real future for irish fishkeeping.

edit and addition
the point i am stressing with the above last sentence is that there were no novices in attendence for whom the talks and presentation would have been of huge value. in fact all who attended would already have a fair bit of knowledge on the discussed subject matter .

Glad it went well Derek, despite the low attendance.
I'm afraid I'm doing long days at the moment, and couldn't make it. I would love to have been there, having seen Dr Burgess before,he's a great speaker, and a real gent.
Don't worry Derek, you'll get that pint at some stage!

one very interesting fact from dr burgess talk was that in clinical tests it was found that fish from asia had been exposed to most antibiotics to a very high level already before import probably rendering them useless for future use.
i think this is what he said but maybe platy damian or xeon can confirm or correct this.

hi ian
it is a pity you could not make it as it was very interesting and there were some interesting insights into the use of plant/herb extracts as medicines as we are sort of discussing on the organic threads.

Between me being quite ill recently and unable to rush about too much, and my OH attending her mother in hospital and not able to give me a lift, it was difficult to make the journey that far from home (even though I am in Cabinteely).

But the night sounded interesting.

I like all the ideas of looking at plants and ecosystems as a whole entity......especially in control of disease/illness. Thinking outside the box....I like.
