Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Shrimp in leaf litter

I have a small tank of about 15L that has a fairly small footprint, 28cmX18cm. As such, I think it'd be great for shrimp but not worth planting up. So I was thinking of setting it up with just a few rocks and loads of leaf litter. Has anyone else done this? Will it work?

Hey, I have a small tank also, not as little as yours but what I did was a few rocks and small stones on a small bit of gravel and just moss in the middle, Shrimp seem happy enough well when I CAN see them usually there hiding or in amongst the moss..

Best of luck mate,

i'm thinking of avoiding plants altogether; I have an endless supply of oak and beech leaves and I think an all leaf litter tank would look great, but I just wonder has anyone else had experience doing it? could there be a downside?

I have no experience with shrimps but I have a couple of smallish tanks with just leaf litter, moss and twigs.

What I can say is that I think thin branches/twigs in a somewhat vertical position are great as a visual replacement for plants. Without these the tank might look a bit empty in the upper region and the shade ads to the feel.

I found a website last night that made the point that most shrimp in the hobby come from small streams or pools where there is pretty much no plant life. Use using them together in the hobby is more about aesthetics than necessity. I think I'm going to set it up with maybe 2 inches or so of beech and oak leaves and see how they do

I does sound like an interesting project, I'm looking forward to the photograps.

I'm considering something similar but for fish and could do with some inspiration.

It's such a small tank that I just don't want the headache of trying to fit my giant hand and a scissors into it every time it needs a bit of a prune! I think for a shrimp tank like this leaves would serve a triple purpose; food, cover and decoration.
Btw, of you ever need oak/beech leaves or alder cones, let me know. I have easy access to all three

Thanks for the offer mate, but I'm lucky enough that I'll be out picking some myself soon.

Getting strange looks in the process:)

I know the feeling. I get the same look from my wife and daughter when they find soil baking in the oven or rocks boiling in a saucepan. Could be worse. When I kept rift lake cichlids I'd get v funny looks when people heard me talking about how many Africans I had!
