Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Right now I am scooping water everywhere as I can but this is going to turn complicated. Wood floor and carpets in bedrooms totally soaked.
So i could use help in different ways:
- help to keep on drying stuff and move things around - one of these dry vacs hoovers that can suck up water, even the carpet cleaning ones
- carpets and wood floor are soaked so in the next day or so my fish tanks have to go, and the furniture, so that carpets and wood can be removed
so please whatever you can do to help will be appreciated
Stephane

I'm too far away to be able to offer any physical help but am certain there will be local members who will be able to give assistance.
I sincerely hope this gets sorted very quickly and also hope that you didn't lose any fish with the flooding.
All I can offer is sympathy (no help at all! - I realise that) and the hope that you get the help you deserve.

Maybe someone close has a garage of a spare room?
I'm in Kildare but I'm hoping to get a lockup in walkinstown at the end of the month- if thats what you need - I'll see if I can get it early? (No promises, just a faint hope . . . . )

Unfortunately I don't have the stuff you need.
If needed I can empty a tank and hold 10-15 adult Discus (or equivalent ) for you.

No dead fish - no tank bust. Just a stupid hose that slid out of the water aging barrel. I had been careful with it but it is in the laundry room and my guess is the vibration of the washer/dryer must have induced it to slide out.
This was made worse by the fact that I have setup up a constant water feed to the barrel and water stops when barrel is full - but it was not getting full...
I am arranging storage a van for tomorrow to get furniture out of the way. Problem is fish tanks and more importantly their inhabitants: that is 9 tanks.

I'll be available for helping you there from 2pm so if someone from the southeast goes there I could use a lift to your place.

I have spent all evening scooping water and moving furniture in bedrooms so i could tear away and remove the carpets.
I realise 4 of my smaller tanks are not in the way of any works that could be done on the apartment floors. I shut down 2 tanks that were containing breeding pairs and they went to the main 450L. That leaves me with 3 big tanks that are in the way: 2 in the living room and 1 in the spare bedroom. However the later is split in 2 by blue foam and on one side I have a breeding pair of discus with tons of fry (first time getting to that stage with such a quantity of fry) and in the other half i have 10 fry about 6 weeks old.
That tank has to be moved because it is on top of a big chunk of soaked carpet. I really dont know if the fry/parents can be moved without this turning into disaster. Any suggestions?

Obviously it depends on how long it has been since they were hatched as to whether they will be established enough to survive, but regular small feeds of freshly-hatched brine shrimp could see them over the loss of the parental mucus as food.
Another thing to try would be to move the parents and then the fry into another tank (together) with the hope that the parental urge is strong enough to overcome the trauma of this move. I have done this several times successfully with both Dwarf and non-dwarf Cichlids but have no idea whether or not this ploy could be as successful with Discus.
But, in the words of the old saying - "Desperate times bring about desperate measures" so it might work.
As I said from the start, this is only saying what I would try, if faced with the same awful scenario.
Perhaps others here can offer more positive advice?
Best of luck with whatever way you choose.

Answering to all comments. That pair and fry are in a 284L on a rack. I have a feeling i may get away by emptying most of the water. I actually need to lift the whole thing enough to move the carpet, then i can set it down again. So thank you for the ideas. And worse come to worse I lose the fry and they will breed again. That is if i decide to keep my tanks.
My renters insurance said they would not cover it. It is 8th floor and so far we have reports of water damage on 7th and 6th floor: I am vey scared.
What is defnitely happening is that I am selling a few tanks:
60l Red cherry shrimp tank
96l Guppy tank with corys and BN pleco
116l Angelfish tank with corys
these 3 are full of plants.

This is every fishkeeper's nightmare - especially those living in flats and apartments.
I really hope this can be worked out amicably and that you don't get so disheartened that the fish have to go.

Some of the help I requested is no longer needed as the apartment is dry.
Some other help which i may have rushed in asking for I may need sooner or later => i realise it will take a few days to get to a plan of action with the management agency. I have shut down some tanks and just to lighten up the load I will sell my non essential tanks (guppies.RCS ...) When the time comes to move the bigger ones I will post.
At this stage for me it is packing some stuff and moving some furniture to a storage (i just need to pack the rest is sorted). So that the rooms are less crowded and if work needs to be done on them there is not a ton of things in the way.
Thanks again
