June 2012 ITFS meeting

it will probably be hard to top last month's meeting and Darren Dalton's presentation but here goes...

Tuesday 12th June from 8.30 pm (SHARP) we'll be having another meeting for the ITFS - come along and meet and chat with a whole host of hobbyists - all are welcome - member or not just come along

We are having another table show to give you a chance to bring along your fish, have them judged and even get an award for your breeders team entry! Further details on the breeders program will follow soon. There will be an online entry form for the table show (I'm just testing this in advance of the end of summer Open Show), the link will follow very shortly

Also - another chance (one of many) to volunteer and help us organise and stage one of the most sought after events in fishkeeping in Ireland. We'll be trying to firm up on all the things it takes to host an event that's open to the public, has a display of over a 100 different fish/shrimp/frogs/planted tanks - all aspects and friends of the hobby.

Anyone interested in showing fish, hearing about what's happening or more importantly can lend a hand in advance and/or on the weekend of the show, please come along. The more volunteers the less everyone will have to do and the more enjoyable for everyone.

What Dates and times would you be looking for help for the show and also what location as if i can book days off work for it ill hope out and help as much as i can

it is planned for the weekend of August 18th/19th, Saturday is set-up day and benching of entries takes place from early evening onwards.
Sunday morning is judging time and then the afternoon is open to the public.
Key areas to help are in setting up the staging on Saturday - but really important is help to take it all down on Sunday evening.

The location is the St Aengus Community Centre, Tymon North, Tallaght, Dublin 24 - down the road from the National Basketball Arena approximately here google map

For the Table Show next week we are asking all entrants who are submitting fish to use the following online form (it's even accessible on your smartphone)

If you have more than 10 fish to enter I can email you a spreadsheet, just let me know what format you prefer.

This is one of the steps we are looking into while seeking improvements to our processing and efficiencies when the Open Show in August wheels around, your support and feedback is greatly appreciated (especially feedback).

That is a really good prize.

Andrew I think it would be better to have just the 22 classes listed on the entry form rather than all the classes and sub-classes.
It would be less confusing to most and easier to change just a few to sub-classes than change a lot to basic classes. If that makes any sense.
I've tried to mail them to you with all mail failing.

I think what darren is saying could be the way to go ,I found the classes part to be more confusing especially when it came to catfish as I wasn't to sure exactly which class so I just put unsure

e.g. If you were to bring a tiger barb, this would be judged against any other barbs entered and not just other tiger barbs. So it could be up against butterfly barbs, dennison barbs, tinfoil barbs etc.

X b-m and X o-t are breeders teams. That is a group of 4 fish from the same spawning, 2 males & 2 females. Minimum 3 months old and maximum 1 year old.
Date of birth must be displayed.

Not sure which just yet.
Will have to discuss this with the OH.

I also see that the FBAS have changed the regulations for 2012 on size to be more realistic and encourage quality.

...and not before time either - this has always been a bone of contention as far I'm concerned for as long as I can remember (and that's a very loooooong time!).

I have some of my own (outspoke even) opinions on the sizes, but maybe for another thread for now.

Anyway, we have filled in the on-line entry form.

So far we have almost 20 entries with a few breeders teams amongst them - great news for the hobby & great for the club

We had 18 entries in the table show - the biggest number I've seen and Derek Doyle commented highly on the quality/standard of the entries.

We had a number of classes to view & judge including:
Pairs of fishes
2 breeders teams:

• Ancistrus sp L183 - lucky so'n'so who went home with those 6 beauties (i'm not jealous at all BTW)
• Nothobranchius Rubripinnis - i'll be chasing this breeder myself for some eggs!!

5 entries in Anabantoides
1 Danio
2 Catfish
1 Corydoras
6 Cichlids

I hope the photo's came out well in what was tricky lighting and they are uploaded here soon !!

There was some really nice fish. Lovely mix of commonly seen and not so often seen species on show.

Interesting to see an unusual (perhaps?) domination with Bettas.......and three different species of Bettas at that! (with a particular note of having Betta coccina and Betta rutilans being benched by 2 different people)

Great to see a superb specimen of a female Siamese Fighter take 1st place.

Yes you're right Ian it was great to see a spread of differing species - that's what these table shows and indeed the Open Show is all about - letting people see the less obvious species that are in hobbyists tanks.

There was a really nice standard and selection of fish presented the other night and all looked very healthy and well cared for. almost any of the benched fish would have been a worthy winner and the judges had to work hard to come to the right conclusion. I was particularly impressed by the breeders teams as both species require a fair bit of work and dedication to breed and rear.
Andrew has been working to upgrade the judging paperwork and is doing a great job so far.
It was a very enjoyable evening.

Thanks to all of ye for benching fish last week and submitting entries online it was a great learning curve for the upcoming show .
There was a great mixture of Classes and excellent quality
Well done to John h for the winning entry and also a big thanks to Gavin and Sean from ARTANE AQUATICS for sponsoring the event.
A big thanks to judges for there patients and commitment .
And lastly but not least a big thanks to Andrew for all his work on the fish data base and online entry it worked a treat
