Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

does anyone know where to get fruit flies?

Have a chat with Stephen in Petco, Long Mile Road - he had some a while back for reptile feeding and told me he could get them whenever I wanted some more.
These are the flightless variety.

Cheers John. I'm looking for them for my archers and mudskippers, though the archers especially. At the size they're at they still struggle with the larger live food. Even mealworms can be a bit of work for them.

They do get small-sized crickets and cockroaches too, although I'm always a bit worried that I'll get an escapee (or two) the 'chirruping' from the crickets would get on my nerves after a while - the tinnitus is bad enough!

Many years ago (when I had a fish house) I kept Archers and - being a competition angler too at that time - I always had left-over maggots (chandlers).

When they pupated I put some of them into a floating plastic bait box (with a hole cut in the lid and when they hatched into bluebottle flies they would leave the box, but most were trapped under the condensation cover - but not for long - they were quickly devoured - it really is astonishing how accurate the archers were!

Leave rotten fruit on window and you would be surprised how fast they will appear

Yeah, right! It's bad enough for my wife having live food in the house anyway, with bringing in stuff with wings!

I tried smallish crickets but they got biggish before I got through them. I'll be getting them again for the mudskippers once I've moved the archers. They have wide enough mouths and a pretty strong bite.

Get a jar and soak a piece of fruit in some vinegar then put the piece of fruit in the jar, make a funnel with a small opening in the bottom and sit it in the jar so the only way in is through that smal opening, put it out the back somewhere warm and sheltered and u might catch some that way

I'll give that a go. And I'll call out to PetCo as well. The wingless variant would suit better though.

I went to PetCo and had a chat with Drew. No fruit flies but they do get them in, just earlier in the week so I missed 'em. Got some v small brown crickets instead.
I didn't walk out with anything more than that! But Drew did put some ideas in my head about getting a tank!

No worries
Honestly, I wasn't looking. If I'm not in the market for fish (which I'm not at the moment) I don't punish myself by looking!

Hi guys.

I have some wingless fruit flies. I'm keeping them for my hatchets.
Unfortunatelly today I froze my 2 cultures and started a new one.
I'll be able to give you alive flies in 2 weeks time or If you prefer frozen food I can give you a small Kinder Egg cointener of them.
Also I have springtails If you're interested?

You can try to buy flies in Carrickmines pet shop.

Cheers

Damian
